I always liken skill development to an Olympic lift. It appears to be a split second of a move, but its a serious of complexed movements. Each of these movements takes a great deal of practice to get right, and over time, they become second nature. You might start with just an empty bar or a PVC pipe, breaking down the movements into smaller steps to focus on specific phases. You’re not going to get it right the first time. Progressing too quickly or too slowly, or using too much weight, can lead to setbacks. The key is focus and patience. Dialing in your technique and staying consistent over time. The reward isn’t just in mastering the movement, it’s in knowing you’ve built the foundation piece by piece, with intention and perseverance. When you finally feel everything align, you’ll see it wasn’t just about the lift, it was about everything you learned along the way.

I recently returned from a learning trip in India with over 20 global R&D and Editorial colleagues traveling to Bangalore and Jaipur from San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, Paris, and Singapore. Here are key takeaways from our in-person UXR sessions: 1. **Come Prepared with Insights**: We summarized past research from UXR, Market Research, and Biz Ops studies. UXR conducted two diary studies with participants in India using Dscout, and hosted a watch party of video highlight reels before departure, enabling teams to review key themes, prepare questions, and engage effectively during sessions. 2. **Engage the Entire Cross-Functional Team**: We split into teams of four for dyad in depth interviews, with each team member taking on a role—facilitator, photographer/videographer, quote-taker, or debrief lead. This fostered active participation rather than passive observation. The teams all got into the learning spirit, exchanging questions and reflections throughout the week of fieldwork! 3. **Leverage Local Expertise**: We partnered with our talented India design and research teammates to facilitate interviews and organize a breakfast mixer to maximize product feedback. This built rapport with participants and provided valuable local insights for our analysis. Thank you to everyone who participated during this learning trip. Special thanks to Emily, Sara, Flaura, Subroto, Shubhangi for your teamwork. Kudos to Chris, Adhirath, Sandrine, Nirajita, Preethi, Vaishnavi, Jamila for planning and hosting a memorable trip. I’m excited to share more about our member learnings and apply these insights to future global research sessions! Photo credit: Steve

We launched our first AI-powered UX research repository earlier this year, thanks to Glean, and it's amazing! Here are the highlights: 1. It summarizes insights across studies in response to simple, natural-language prompts. 2. We built a custom chat bot to only leverage our findings and structure the output according to our guidance (with references to all source material!) 3. This tool is available to anyone at the company and has been used by Designers, Product Managers, Data Scientists, Engineers, Market Researchers, Product Marketing Managers, and our team of UX Researchers! My colleague Brandi A. and I will be sharing how we got here, and what we're still struggling with, at next week's UXinsight Think Thank session. https://lnkd.in/eb5TiA2P Please join us! #UXR #AI #Glean #UserExperience #ResearchRepository #UXDesign

Leadership isn’t always tied to titles or positions. It’s about your ability to influence, inspire, and uplift others, no matter your role. Here are a few foundational principles I follow: Expertise is a starting point for leadership whether in a skill or subject matter. It earns credibility and opens doors for opportunities to lead because people are more likely to follow someone who is knowledgeable and capable.? Leadership isn't confined to a role. Whether you're an individual contributor or a manager, the power to lead comes from your ability to lead by example, influence others, and inspire change. Titles and leadership traits are not the same. A title might give you authority but doesn't automatically equip you with leadership qualities. True leadership transcends hierarchy and job titles. Regardless of your position, it's about how you guide, support, and empower others. Leadership is a choice, not an obligation. Everyone has the capacity to lead, but not everyone chooses to, nor everyone should. This is perfectly fine. Leadership is not a constant state. Even those who consider themselves leaders must recognize the value of being students from time to time. Growth often comes from stepping back, learning, and adapting. Are there any others that stick out to you?

    Manager, Design Operations at LinkedIn

Today is our first day of “Return to office” for LinkedIn Design. Our team has been finalizing desk assignments, and creating office collaboration spaces that inspire our team to do their best work together. I also put together a basket of items we may need in office - phone chargers, hand sanitizer, tide wipes, advil/pepto and more. What would you add in your RTO emergency kit?

Senior Design Manager at LinkedIn | Speaker | Adjunct Professor at CCA | Design Mentor on ADPList.org

Last week, I had the pleasure of giving a guest lecture at California State University - East Bay to a group of Masters students looking to break into Product Design. I talked about my journey breaking into UX Design - pivoting from my business and consulting career. I also had the opportunity to talk more about my role at LinkedIn as a Senior Design Manager and the responsibilities of things that my team does to create quality products. People ask me often why I give back and how I find the time to carve time out of my incredibly busy schedule. It's because when I was pivoting to design, seeing role models that I could look up to made the journey feel less daunting. Influencing the next generation is so important as they will be the next set of innovators and creators. Thank you Ian Pollock for inviting me for this opportunity and for all the students who showed up with some wonderful questions. Onwards and upwards to a new beginning in your UX journey! ?? #linkedinlife #linkedindesign #studentsofdesign #productdesign #userexperiencedesign
