Director of Investment Advisory @ GQI | MA @ Cambridge, MSc @ ETH Zurich | Past: Quantum Dev @ Quantistry, Researcher @ Los Alamos National Laboratory, CERN | Quantum Leonardo
Just wrapped up my analysis of #quantum tech's $7.06B #investment landscape (2020-2024) published in Laser Focus World. Here's what nobody's talking about: Two parallel realities are emerging: --- On the surface: Record investments in 2024, $1.22B in quantum computer deployments, and aggressive manufacturing scale-ups (IQM Quantum Computers, PsiQuantum, Equal1, Diraq, Quandela). --- Under the hood: SPAC'd companies flirting with delisting (except IonQ at $5.7B), Zapata's closure, and #VC shifting from "spray and pray" to concentrated bets. The plot twist? The real money isn't in #quantumcomputing (yet). Global Quantum Intelligence, LLC's Quantum Market Model shows quantum-safe cryptography - ironically driven by fear of quantum computing itself - will dominate revenue for the next 5-7 years. Key insight for investors: Stop chasing headline market sizes. The quantum opportunity isn't about timing the entire market - it's about matching your capabilities to specific value chain segments. ?? Strategic take: Public funding isn't a crutch - it's the catalyst that will bridge private market caution with technological momentum. ?? Question for quantum tech leaders & investors: Which segment will dominate quantum tech M&A in 2025-2030? A) Hardware consolidation among NISQ players B) Cybersecurity firms acquiring quantum-safe startups C) Cloud providers absorbing quantum software and midstack companies The fascinating part? The data suggests a counterintuitive winner. Share your take below ?? #QuantumIsComing Link to the full article: https://lnkd.in/ggNZe_ci Quantum Computing Report, André M. Dr. Adam Carter, CEO of OpenLight, is featured in Laser Focus World’s, ‘Following the Photons: a Photonics Podcast’, in an interview by Justine Murphy (5th November). Justine covers Adam’s career in the semiconductor communications industry and his involvement with some of the world’s leading, optics businesses and manufacturers. This includes as CCO of Foxcon Optical Interconnects; his involvement in turning Oclaro from a loss-making, manufacturer of optical products, to its sale to Lumentum Holdings; managing Cisco’s Transceiver Module Group, which acquired Lightwire, a silicon photonics company; and his earlier roles at Avago Technologies, Agilent Technologies, Hewlett Packard, and BT & D (British Telecom and DuPont), during which time he moved from the UK to the USA. Adam goes on to explain OpenLight’s unique, fabless, business model, where customers are enabled to design silicon photonics PASICs (Photonic Application Specific ICs) using its process design kit (PDK) - all built within its licensed foundry ecosystem. The PDK is available to use with a RTU (right to use) license and device production also has a chargeable license structure. Finally, OpenLight receives royalties for each wafer produced. OpenLight’s extensive patent portfolio, expected to exceed 450 individual patents by the end of 2025, protects the IP that makes this business model possible.
