I am pleased to announce this publication on technology we are developing for near net shape (NNS) large scale additive manufacturing (LSAM) using a friction stir additive manufacturing variant know as additive friction surfacing. In this work we present a new approach to additive friction surfacing where we are using large diameter rods, lower spindle speeds and a "forward" tilt angle to achieve unmatched deposition rates. Kudos to the team: David Garcia, Tianhao Wang, Tinkun Liu, Uchechi Okeke, Ph.D., Mackenzie Perry, Christopher Smith. Thrust chambers have historically used multiple materials to optimize weight, thermal, and structural performance, and now we have solutions to further optimize using additive manufacturing. Through the Rapid Analysis and Manufacturing Propulsion Technology (RAMPT) project, our cross-agency, industry, and academia team transformed thrust chamber assembly (TCA) design and manufacturing. We integrated various AM processes, allowing for multiple alloys and unique internal features, and added a carbon fiber composite overwrap. The chamber itself was built with laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) GRCop-42, a multi-alloy manifold interface was deposited using laser powder directed energy deposition (LP-DED), and a NASA HR-1 nozzle was directly built onto the chamber with LP-DED. The entire assembly was then composite overwrapped with advanced high thermal gradient resins, eliminating some joints and achieving a 40% weight reduction. We recently completed successful hot-fire testing of the integrated RAMPT technology. It's been an honor to work with this innovative team. Great job, everyone! Ad astra. #LSAAT2024 proved to be an exceptional event as evidenced by the engagement, networking, and increased attendance this year. The event brought together hundreds of industry and academic leaders, and government dignitaries from across the globe to share their knowledge, trends, and developments in the Large Scale Additive Action Team event. ? The LSAAT Event welcomed 19 speakers with progressive presentations, 8 student posters on display, and a full exhibitor assembly for invaluable networking. ? Two LSAAT poster competition winners were awarded this year: Blanca Palacios Salamanca from Cold Spray and Rapid Deposition (ColRAD) Florida International University and Jason Langevin from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Congratulations to the winners!? ? We are very pleased with the fantastic turn out and are looking forward to the next 2025 Action Team Events!?

In our Cold Spray and Rapid Deposition (ColRAD) Laboratory, Additive Manufacturing and Advanced Multi-Functional Coatings are at the forefront of research.
Our Cold Spray and Rapid Deposition (ColRAD) team had a fantastic time at CSAT/LSAAT 2024 conference in Worcester, MA earlier this week, where we showcased our cutting-edge research and innovative projects. ColRAD@Florida International University team was honored to present 2 invited talks and display 6 posters covering a wide range of topics, including: 1. Cold spray high-strength aluminum alloy 2. High-speed imaging in Wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) 3. Electronic and radiation shielding applications of cold spray 4. Robotics and 5. Corrosion in WAAM A special highlight of the event was Blanca Palacios Salamanca, our PhD student, who won the Judges' Choice Poster Award for her outstanding work on the "In-situ deformation mechanics of WAAM Ti". Congratulations to Blanca and the entire team (Arvind Agarwal, Tanaji Paul, Tyler Dolmetsch, Dwayne McDaniel, ABDERRACHID Hamrani, Denny John, Anil Lama, Sohail M.A.K. Mohammed, Katrina Rodriguez, and Md Munim Rayhan) for their hard work and achievements!
