On a hot summer night in 1893, a man named James Cornish was rushed to Provident Hospital with a stab wound to the chest. When he went into shock, Dr. Daniel Hale Williams suspected a life-threatening injury near the heart. Williams performed a groundbreaking surgery that saved Cornish’s life, allowing him to live for more than 20 years.
