The city of Reno, Nevada, is breaking records in ways it doesn’t like: A 2024 analysis of 241 cities showed that Reno has heated up faster than any other city in the United States. While the country as a whole warmed by 2.6 degrees Fahrenheit on average between 1970 and 2023, Reno saw an increase of 7.6 degrees. A heat wave that hit Reno in July 2024 made for the hottest month in the Biggest Little City’s documented history. https://lnkd.in/gzksXUq9

What is known? What isn’t known? Knowable Magazine, the digital publication from Annual Reviews, seeks to make that knowledge accessible to all. We report on the current state of play across a wide variety of fields — from agriculture to high-energy physics; biochemistry to water security; the origins of the universe to psychology. Every story is thoroughly researched, reported, edited, copy-edited and fact-checked. And as part of our nonprofit mission, all of our work is completely free. Proud to be part of Africa's solar mini-grid revolution! ??? We've witnessed firsthand the life-changing impact of reliable, affordable electricity. According to our recent study mentioned in this insightful article from Knowable Magazine, communities we serve have seen median household incomes quadruple after gaining access to our mini-grids! Beyond economic benefits, the ripple effects are profound: - Women gain time previously spent collecting water, allowing them to start businesses - Local entrepreneurs can operate longer hours with significantly lower energy costs - Communities feel safer with reliable lighting at night The article rightly points out that mini-grids aren't without challenges. That's why we're committed to training local technicians to maintain systems and working with communities to boost economic activity that makes these installations sustainable long-term. Nigeria is becoming "a poster child for mini-grid development across Africa," and we're proud to be part of this movement bringing clean, reliable power to the 600 million Africans currently lacking electricity access. #solarprogress #sdg7 #renewableenergy #renewableinvestment #cleanenergy #solarenergy #minigrids #ruralelectrification #energyaccess #offgridsolar #socialimpact
Nigeria is pioneering the development of small, off-grid solar panel installations to bring reliable electricity to remote communities — setting a model for other African countries.

?? Africa’s countries account for less than 5 percent of global carbon dioxide emissions; nevertheless, many have set ambitious phase-out goals ?? Nigeria, where only about a quarter of the national grid generates electricity and where many turn to generators for power, is leaning on mini-grids: small, off-grid solar panel installations that can bring reliable electricity to remote communities ?? “Nigeria is actually like a poster child for mini-grid development across Africa.” — Energy expert Rolake Akinkugbe-Filani, managing director of EnergyInc Advisors ?? I helped map heat islands in Reno last summer and wrote about those efforts here and around the country for Knowable Magazine. Local heat mapping campaigns are consistently finding temperature differences of 10F or more within the same cities—enough to expose people to serious health risks. Data from these campaigns can also help target measures to cool urban hotspots, putting trees and heat-reflecting surfaces where they are needed most. Read on for more!
In metros like Reno, Nevada, citizen scientists hit the road to collect detailed temperature data — key to taming urban heat, saving lives and designing for a cooler future. ?? Ula Chrobak

“Combating global warming means reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the building sector, which is responsible for 39 percent of emissions globally”, writes Kurt Kleiner for Knowable Magazine. That is why new methods of sustainable building are gaining traction in the global market. One of them is a new technology called mass timber: massive, manufactured wood elements are used to replace steel beams and concrete in skyscrapers. Its actual impact in reducing GHG emissions is still unknown, and many challenges arise with the use of wood, but it brings forth a sustainable option for future greener cities. ?
