When fracking chemicals are disclosed, consumers take notice. Research by University of Hong Kong’s Anson Jiang and University of Toronto’s Baohua Xin used the NielsenIQ Retail Scanner data set, housed at the Kilts Center, to track household purchases from 2006 to 2019—covering the period before and after disclosure mandates in fracking and nonfracking US counties. Their findings reveal that transparency prompts residents to invest in protective measures like water filtration. Knowledge is power—and transparency drives action.
