Whenever we travel, I always wind up coming home with library pictures. And this week, I am positively thrilled to take you to my new library. Walking into the long-awaited new Charlotte Mecklenburg Library - University City Regional building on Saturday, I was overcome with emotions: happiness, wonder, and love for all things books and libraries. What made it even more special was seeing the leader of our neighborhood’s book club at the same time. Gorgeous views, gracious nooks, and even a horse await book lovers. Libraries aren’t all about books. They’re about community. One of my favorite projects ever was a rebranding project for the Glen Ellyn Public Library. The project scope called for scoping out other libraries and working closely with the team. At first, the librarians weren’t too excited about our proposed PR project. Why not? We invited patrons to write on post-its to be pasted throughout the library - anywhere they liked. Anywhere? Yes, anywhere. “Why I love my library” was the campaign’s theme. Soon heart-shaped notes were dotting street-facing windows, popping up on shelves and even making their way into media coverage. You could feel the love at a glance and get a hugs in the air feeling when you walked through the door. My love for libraries started when I was big enough to check out books in the children’s library in Danville, Illinois. Maybe it was the turtles swimming on the librarian’s desk that kept me coming back. A budding bibliophile, I grew up to be a lifelong reader and a lover of all things library. As a student at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, I had access to the second-largest academic library in the United States with over 10 million volumes. You’ll see an image of the grad library here along with the Library of Congress and The British Museum’s reading room as well as Vita Sackville-West’s library at Sissinghurst Castle, a reading portal in Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 lounge, the largest library at sea, and the library at the Arts Club of Chicago. Twenty-three years ago, today, we remember how 9/11 changed the world – and communications. Where were you on September 11? On September 11, 2001, I got up and went through the usual motions of a working mother with three children – ages 12, 9, and 7. My husband was away on business in Rotterdam. As a PR consultant, I was excited for a meeting with our client, the local school district, about concepting and photographing the annual report. I marveled at how beautifully the day was starting out. On our way out the door to walk my boys to school that morning, the phone rang. A friend was calling with the first news about the attacks. I didn’t say anything to the boys, but I told her I’d call her back after I dropped them off. Walking down our quiet, sunny street the news was surreal. How could a day seem so idyllic when the world was falling apart? Arriving at the school district headquarters, the staff was stunned and silent, listening for updates, and quietly considering crisis communication responses. Every year on this day, I think back to those first few turbulent hours after the tragic event and remember how fragile the world seemed and how strong and calm we needed to be as crisis communicators. The ability to communicate quickly, accurately, and compassionately was paramount, and it’s a lesson that still guides my work today. I hope this article inspires crisis communication planning.
