Finland and the OSCE: "History Will Not End Here" This essay is for the women and men of the diplomatic corps. Their work, especially in the OSCE context, often goes unrecognized. "Important but thankless," is how former Finnish Ambassador to the US Jukka Valtasaari labeled it. This is my contribution to changing that perception. In opening discussions about how to reform the OSCE, a colleague said to me "it should just be taken apart." My response was, "I think we should first have a debate and motivate people to think about the institution." To think about the sweat, blood, and tears diplomats, civil society actors, and civilian crisis management experts put into this institution, and their societies, every day. George Kennan considered motivating shared aims among nations as one of the main tasks of US diplomacy. The “cultivation of such solidarity is one of our strongest and most powerful measures short of war,” he said. This essay is a call for intellectual dexterity. To cultivate a multi-pronged strategy for Eurasia, to address the myriad of threats and challenges that Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 has made all too apparent, and to recognize the dividing lines that are descending across Eurasia. This is a call to continue the debate begun by the U.S. Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe in their report "Contesting Russia: Preparing for the Long Term Russian Threat" (https://lnkd.in/g2jXS84c). The task of those supporting a rules-based international order will not get any easier going forward. But as one colleague said "we will continue to fight, because that is what we do." This is an essay for a better future, however idealist, and those willing to work collectively towards that vision. https://lnkd.in/gN6fCgy7
