Open Access: Asking the Right Questions The transition to open access has made remarkable progress over the last 25 years, but is article count the only metric that matters? In the latest Katina article, Malavika Legge of Open Access Scholarly Publishing Association challenges us to think deeper. Your Students May Not Have Read the Syllabus. But This Tool Did. Morgan V? reviews Open Syllabus Analytics in this week's Resource Review. This one-of-a-kind resource offers promising analysis of millions of syllabi. However, while the analytics is a resource that enables unique possibilities, the execution leaves much to be desired. "At this scale, it presents a one-of-a-kind collection of a ubiquitous teaching artifact and provides interactive tools exploring useful points of analysis that are easy to imagine integrating into the workflows of several professional and academic roles." ?? Rethinking Usage Metrics in an Open Access World As Portland Press—publishing on behalf of Biochemical Society—prepares to transition its journals to Subscribe to Open (S2O), they are reimagining how to measure and report usage—shifting from traditional metrics to a more global perspective. In the latest Open Knowlege article by Gaynor Redvers-Mutton and Ciaran Hoodendoorn explores how the temporary removal of paywalls during COVID-19 and the introduction of Read & Publish (R&P) agreements have impacted usage trends. They also identified usage trends that may hold some clue as to how usage might change once more of our content either becomes OA or is paywalled, depending on the result of S2O collective action and described how they're using dissemination platforms to maximize the reach of the research they publish. A Master Class in Destroying Trust Clarivate’s “transformative subscription-based strategy” caught the library world flat-footed. How did this happen? And where do we go from here? Sunshine Jacinda Carter takes a hard look in the latest Future of Work column. As the article states: "Of course the goals of vendors and library professionals can be in conflict. And yet, in our work with vendors, as exemplified in my experience with ELUNA—a service provided by libraries and their employees to a corporation, in the form of a nonprofit, which we described as a community—it has at times been easy to feel as if we all share a commitment to libraries and librarianship. ? We do not." This decision raises critical questions about access, ownership, and the evolving role of libraries in an increasingly subscription-driven landscape. What are your thoughts on the implications for collection development, budgeting, and the future of scholarly resources? ?? Funding Cuts & Open Infrastructure: A Chain Reaction with Global Consequences The first month of the Trump administration set the stage for funding freezes, budget cuts, and eliminations of key research roles—a pattern mirrored globally in countries like France, Argentina, and the Netherlands. Lauren Collister, Katherine Skinner, and Kaitlin Thaney of IOI have been tracking the impact through their 2024 State of Open Infrastructure Report and research on open research software infrastructure. Open infrastructure relies heavily on #HigherEd for funding and support. When universities face cuts, the chain reaction is undeniable: ?? Increased tuition and housing costs as student aid declines ?? Rising textbook and material costs as subsidies disappear ?? Local businesses struggling due to workforce reductions ?? Layoffs of key infrastructure personnel, leaving vital systems unsupported ?? Shrinking institutional memberships, putting open tools at risk A Call For Visible Action: ?? Invest in open infrastructure where it matters most—funders, institutions, and adopters must step up. ?? Identify keystone infrastructures—what five open tools can you not work without? ?? Pinpoint urgent areas of concern—where is support needed most? ?? Speak up! Share your concerns, insights, and solutions with at [email protected] and the comments below. Let’s act collectively—and visibly—to safeguard the future of open research. ?? The Trump administration has launched an orchestrated attack on academic freedom, research funding, and the institutional autonomy that underpins intellectual progress. Annual Reviews President and Editor in Chief Richard Gallagher along with Katina Sr. Editor for #OpenKnowledge Curtis Brundy have issued A Call for Harm Reduction Strategies. The assault on research and higher education isn’t just collateral damage from wide-ranging realignment of budgets, but an orchestrated attack on academic freedom, research funding, and the institutional autonomy that underpins intellectual progress. Each of these will have immediate and downstream impacts on academic libraries. This is the first in a series of articles outlining the impact and damage from the fast-moving changes roiling science, higher education, and libraries. "We will surface stories from the front lines that capture the advocacy, hard work, and perseverance of our community. And we will advance a dialogue about how we, as a community, should respond.” ?? In the latest Future of Work, Seth M. Porter, D.P.A, MA, MLIS, Dean of Libraries at UCCS, shares his forward-thinking approach to balancing innovation and operational excellence—what he calls the "Innovation-Operation Perpetual Motion Engine." Seth's approach integrates two core principles. "The first is the “borderlands of innovation,” where creativity emerges from the collision of diverse ideas, perspectives, and disciplines," he says. ?? Building a National Community of Practice for Diamond Open Access ?? The Irish Open Access Publishers (IOAP) began as a small initiative in 2021, but in just a few years, it has evolved into a thriving, engaged national community of practice—uniting publishers, academics, librarians, policymakers, and funders to advance Diamond Open Access publishing in Ireland. In her article in Katina, IOAP manager and co-founder Jane Buggle explores how the IOAP has developed, applying Etienne and Beverly Wenger-Trayner’s Communities of Practice (CoP) theory to understand its growth. The IOAP’s work is shaped by: ? Domain – A shared commitment to Diamond OA and bibliodiversity ? Community – Active collaboration and engagement across sectors ? Practice – The creation of shared resources, policies, and publishing initiatives From advisory board expansion to national OA projects and inaugural Diamond OA Publishing Awards, the IOAP continues to make significant strides. Their work is proof that when a community comes together with a shared purpose, real transformation happens. ?? Academic Databases and the Art of the Overcharge: How much should libraries really be paying for academic databases? Joel B. Thornton, CPA and Katina Senior Editor Curtis Brundy analyze pricing data from SciFinder, SCOPUS, and Web of Science, revealing how vendors use price discrimination—charging libraries not what’s fair, but what they’re willing to pay. Their research sheds light on the opaque pricing strategies in the database market and offers practical guidance for libraries to strengthen their next negotiation. “As in the academic journal market, lopsided access to information in the database market allows vendors to deploy a strategy of price discrimination, charging not what is fair, but what the customer is willing to pay.” ??
