KETRACO Managing Director Dr. Eng. John Mativo MBS led a team from the Company, to brief the Prime Cabinet Secretary Hon. Musalia Mudavadi in Vihiga County last evening on the 220kV Kibos-Kakamega-Musaga and 400kV Lessos-Loosuk Transmission Lines. The projects, under the Privately Initiated Proposals (PIP), reaffirm the government’s commitment to expanding electricity infrastructure, boosting economic growth, and ensuring a stable power supply. A consortium of Africa50 and PowerGrid has presented a proposal to undertake the projects. Dr. Mativo informed Mudavadi that public participation is ongoing, with the final report expected by end of March. Mudavadi noted that Western Kenya has immense industrial potential but continues to lag due to unreliable electricity. The Kibos-Kakamega-Musaga Transmission Line will improve power reliability, increase electricity capacity from 20MW to 324MW, and provide redundancy by linking the region to multiple power sources, including Olkaria, Turkwel, Sondu, Sangoro, and Uganda’s interconnector. It will also feature an optical fibre connection and reduce technical losses by shortening medium-voltage lines. Dr. Mativo also emphasized the importance of completing the Mariakani substation to enhance geothermal power transmission to Mombasa, improving energy stability at the Coast. These projects are key to strengthening the national grid and supporting industrial and economic growth.
