While Artstor is not included in the JSTOR Access in Prison content at the moment, many educators teaching inside prisons also teach students on traditional campuses that do have Artstor. Cornell to Offer Off-Campus Bachelor's Degree CPEP to Pilot Initiative at Cayuga Correctional This past week, Cornell's Faculty Senate voted to approve the university's first remote, off-campus degree offering. The resolution includes a provision allowing CPEP to deliver this degree on-site in prison. We plan to pilot the program at Cayuga Correctional Facility (CCF) in 2026, providing a pathway for qualified incarcerated learners to receive a bachelor's degree from Cornell University. With this initiative, we believe Cornell will become the first Ivy League university to offer a baccalaureate program in prison. This tremendous milestone would not be possible without the many individuals who contribute to this challenging work each semester: our students and alumni, whose exemplary efforts have paved the way; our faculty, graduate and undergraduate instructors, tutors, and facilitators; and our supporters, including the Mellon Foundation and Ascendium Education Philanthropy, as well as Cornell alumni donors of all sizes. We also extend our gratitude to community volunteers, partnering organizations, and the countless individuals working on the front lines to deliver the CPEP program both in prison and in the community. Our adult re-engagement work at Ithaka S+R has had a lot of great developments recently, and I'm particularly excited about this opportunity to work with institutions so close to home in Pennsylvania. In collaboration with the Pennsylvania Department of Education, Ithaka S+R is launching a community of practice to enhance #AdultLearner re-enrollment efforts and develop new solutions for institutions. Grateful to be among so many devoted and talented colleagues at the Higher Education in Prison grantee convening of the Ascendium Education Group in Montgomery, AL. Today’s morning session featured a presentation by journalist Robert Samuels, author of His Name is George Floyd, followed by a moderated panel with four men in leadership, all of whom had been incarcerated.

It was super meaningful to work with Elena Moore, a politics reporter from NPR, on this story on formerly-incarcerated, first-time voters. We talked to Kunlyna Tauch in California, Craig Muhammad in Maryland and L. Elizabeth Shatswell in Washington. Johnny Pippins told us about how, despite gaining clemency from Illinois last year to start his PhD at University of Iowa, he remains disenfranchised due to having a felony because of where he lives. I've gotten to know all of them over the last year through my work covering prison education for Open Campus. It was heartening to have most of them share their experience voting for the first time, and heartbreaking to hear their ongoing frustration for those who remained barred from participating in democracy after prison. Also thanks to Megan Pratz, politics editor at NPR. (The idea for this story was hatched over lunch in DC last month and wouldn't have happened if Megan and I hadn't both been Kiplinger fellows several years ago Ohio University.)
