Trajectory of Telework in a Brazilian Labor Court During the COVID-19 Pandemic A Longitudinal Study of Working and Health Conditions According to Work Modality El Kadri Filho, Fauzi PhD; de Lucca, Sérgio Roberto PhD Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine 66(11):p e606-e613, November 2024. | DOI: 10.1097/JOM.0000000000003220 Telework performed under appropriate support can promote better health conditions among employees. As telework may be associated with an increased ergonomic risk related to the workstation, companies must be able to assess working conditions at home and offer similar structure to those of face-to-face work. LEARNING OUTCOMES After completing this educational activity, the learner will be better able to: Deepen the knowledge of how the work modality has been related to ergonomic and psychosocial risks and to aspects of physical and mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic. Understand the importance of companies assessing working conditions regardless of the work modality. Understand that telework may preserve workers' health when associated with adequate working conditions at home and support from organizations. https://lnkd.in/e3z72MJh #JOEM

Teleworking for Medical Reasons Evidence From a Spanish Multinational Company Reinoso-Barbero, Luis PhD, MD; Gieco, Antonella PhD; López-Ríos, Adriana MD; Rodríguez-Díaz, Jose Luis MD; Gómez-Paredes, Laura PhD, MD; Mu?oz-Gutiérrez, Juan MD; Pérez-Herreras, Cristina MD; Gómez-Gallego, Félix PhD Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine 66(11):p e600-e605, November 2024. | DOI: 10.1097/JOM.0000000000003219 Requests for telework for medical reasons are rare, accounting 0.3% of employees. The main cause is musculoskeletal issues (30%), predominantly affecting women. Of these, 58% were denied, 33% were temporarily approved, and 8% were approved indefinitely. We believe that telework for office employees can reduce the incidence of sick leave. LEARNING OUTCOMES Enumerate the different medical causes for teleworking requests. Discuss how teleworking can be useful for employees with different medical conditions.https://https://lnkd.in/edMaVzDK #JOEM

Association Between Urinary Rare Earth Element Levels and Metabolic Syndrome A Cross-sectional Study in the Minority Population of Guangxi in China Xu, Xuemei BS; Lu, Peini BS; Luo, Xingxi MMed; Wei, Gangjie BS; Huang, Xuanqian BS; Lv, Fangfang MMed; Mo, Caimei MMed; Lei, Lidi MMed; Huang, Dongping PhD; Su, Li MMed, PhD; Zeng, Xiaoyun MMed, PhD; Qiu, Xiaoqiang MMed, PhD; Liu, Shun MMed, PhD Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine 66(11):p e593-e599, November 2024. | DOI: 10.1097/JOM.0000000000003217 Understanding the association between exposure to rare earth elements and metabolic syndrome and its components will not only help physicians better assess health risks but also help prevent and control the occurrence and development of metabolic syndrome. LEARNING OUTCOMES This article analyzes the association between rare earth elements and metabolic syndrome, and suggests that rare earth elements may have different effects on different genders. Upon reading this article, health policy makers can more effectively incorporate environmental exposure factors into the development of policies for metabolic diseases. https://lnkd.in/dg8JiFwj #JOEM

OPEN ACCESS Article Toxicant Exposures and Health Symptoms in Military Pesticide Applicators From the 1991 Gulf War Krengel, Maxine PhD; Sullivan, Kimberly PhD; Zundel, Clara G. PhD; Keating, Dylan MPH; Orlinsky, Leah BA; Bradford, William MS; Stone, Callie MD; Thompson, Terri-Ann PhD; Heeren, Timothy PhD; White, Roberta F. PhD Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine 66(11):p e584-e592, November 2024. | DOI: 10.1097/JOM.0000000000003215 The impact of acetylcholinesterase inhibiting pesticide exposures in pesticide control personnel from the 1991 Gulf War was associated with lasting health symptoms in eight symptom domains. This work suggests that occupational pesticide exposed groups should be monitored for chronic health symptoms and adverse outcomes. LEARNING OUTCOMES In this study, high exposure/impact to pesticides was associated with greater health symptoms and worse outcomes in military pesticide applicators The highest mixed exposure/impact group to pesticides and pyridostigmine bromide was associated with meeting criteria for Gulf War Illness based on the stringent Kansas criteria The pesticide applicators in this cohort were well informed about type and usage of pesticides that they likely had during the war https://lnkd.in/dpNBRven #JOEM

Factors Related to Firefighters' Food Behaviors at the Fire Station A Quantitative Study Sire, Thomas MSc; Carbonneau, Noémie PhD; Houle, Julie PhD; Trudeau, Fran?ois PhD; Gendron, Philippe PhD Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine 66(11):p e576-e583, November 2024. | DOI: 10.1097/JOM.0000000000003214 This study provides insights for health professionals and fire departments seeking to improve well-being, performance, and health of firefighters. The results suggest prioritizing improvements in autonomous motivation and nutritional knowledge, reducing access to unhealthy foods at the fire station and creating a social climate that encourages healthy food behaviors among teammates. LEARNING OUTCOMES Individual factors together with social, physical, and occupational environment of the fire station are associated to firefighters' food behaviors at work. Level of education, self-perceived nutrition knowledge, autonomous motivation, accessibility to unhealthy foods, and years of experience were the best predictors of firefighters' diet quality at the fire station. Body mass index, autonomous motivation, and meals interrupted by emergency calls were the best predictors of firefighters' fast-food consumption at the fire station. https://lnkd.in/e_32EXkj #JOEM

Neuron-Specific Enolase as a Biological Marker for Welders’ Pneumoconiosis El-Sherif, Ghada Hossam El-Din MD; El-Shafy, Wessam Sabry Abd MD; Mohammed AbdEl-Samie, Aiesha Ashraf MD Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine 66(11):p 903-907, November 2024. | DOI: 10.1097/JOM.0000000000003201 This study showed that welders are exposed to metal fumes such as chromium, which may lead to lung injury predisposing to welders’ pneumoconiosis, and that regular chest x-rays together with serum neuron-specific enolase can be used in periodic examination for early diagnosis in exposed workers. LEARNING OUTCOMES Review welders’ pneumoconiosis and its diagnostic methods. Discuss neuron-specific enolase (NSE) as a biomarker. Elaborate the association between chromium exposure and NSE. https://lnkd.in/efzdqmFi #JOEM
