  • Gangs have been increasingly pathologized over the past few decades. Unlike the humanistic approach of the Chicago School in the 1920s, gangs are now seen as plastic folk devils outside of history, which has negative consequences for democracy in an era of punishment and coercion. This is the central thesis of David Brotherton’s influential book on street gangs. Drawing on original research, Brotherton examines gangs as sites of cultural resistance, community movements, and social practices while critically reviewing gang theory and the global spread of gangs. He challenges dominant gang discourses and advocates for a critical approach, urging researchers to engage reflexively with the agency of gang members. With three new chapters, the revised edition explores alternative interventions in gang violence and desistance and features interviews with Antonio Fernandez (King Tone). The book is a key resource for those studying juvenile delinquency, youth studies, and gang culture. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eqM6jgb5

  • Opinion: The Data Collaborative for Justice Director Michael Rempel, believes New York City can solve its overcrowded jail issues and overcome the obstacles to closing Rikers Island. Despite the challenges, he argues that closure is still possible. Last year, a federal judge held the city accountable for failing to provide humane conditions at Rikers, ordering steps toward a federal takeover of the jails. Receivership could be a game-changer, as experts say it would allow for better management and improved safety by giving more control over staffing decisions. Read more: https://lnkd.in/e55bRQd3.
