Last week MSSD students visited the Old First House in Philadelphia and heard directly from the developers and sustainability consultants. The project is an affordable mixed use building for the neighboring church that is also going for several certifications including Passive House. It was such an education to observe first-hand the building techniques and strategies, as well as to hear directly from?Troy Hannigan (Community Ventures), David Cohen (MaGrann Associates), and David Salamon, RA, CPHC, LFA (Re:Vision Architecture). Thanks to you all for making this such a fabulous experience! Jefferson College of Architecture and the Built Environment #MSSD

HOW DO TEXTURES MAKE US FEEL? I utilized so much research on color theory when I first started out in interior design but I always wished there was more information about how to use materials in response to emotions as well. Luckily, this topic does seem to be picking up more, especially where biophilia is concerned, but I still don't see many graphics pulling it all together in one place so I thought others new to the field might enjoy an image I created to document the results of a survey I conducted over a decade ago to determine the link between textures and various adjectives people use when describing spaces. I focused on hard materials for this study and it was limited to just over a hundred participants but years later, with additional related research and experience behind me, this information still holds.

It's that time of year again; first reviews of the semester! We kicked it off with my third year architecture studio (Jefferson College of Architecture and the Built Environment) student groups presenting their program documents which encompassed extensive city and site research, site analysis, program matrix and development, precedent study and client research. Looking forward to seeing these projects develop over the next 12 weeks. Next up, conceptual design. A massive thank you to my BartonPartners Architects Planners, Inc. colleagues, Cassandra Marks and Kellie Woodring for being such amazing reviewers. I know the students and I found their insight and thoughts to be very valuable.

The 2024 Philadelphia Product Parade tonight was outstanding! My textiles and materials class was in attendance and we were able to take advantage of the many products on display. A bonus was bumping into many Jefferson College of Architecture and the Built Environment alumni as well (so many more than the photos show!) It was so wonderful to see my current students, alumni, and longtime friends. Catching up with each of you was a true joy!

  • Join us for “Intervening informal settlements in Latin America: Architecture as an agent of social change,” on Monday, 23 September, at 5:30PM, at DEC Forum - DEC Building (East Falls) with Pablo Meninato, Associate Professor, Temple University. For more information on your visit and register for this lecture (Zoom option), click the link in our bio: https://lnkd.in/eAEZxVMF. Presently, more than one billion people live in informal settlements or slums worldwide. Meninato will present the outcomes of a five-year research initiative focusing on the design intervention in informal settlements in five Latin American cities: Rio de Janeiro, Medellí, S?o Paulo, Buenos Aires, and Tijuana. Taken together, the Latin American architects, planners, landscape architects, researches, and stakeholders involved in these projects confirm that urbanism, architecture, and landscape deign can produce positive urban and social transformations for th most underprivileged segments of the population. Pablo Meninato, PhD, is an architect, architectural critic, and educator. A native of Argentina, he has taught and practiced architecture in Philadelphia and in Buenos Aires. Before joining Temple University as an Associate Professor, Meninato taught at various academic institutions, including the University of Pennsylvania, Thomas Jefferson University, and Universidad de Buenos Aires. He is currently the secretary of the Board of Directors of the Society of Architectural Historians - Philadelphia Chapter. Meninato is the author of various books, including Unexpected Affinities - The History of Type in the Architectural Project from Laugier to Duchamp (Routledge, 2018), Informality and the City - Theories, Actions, and Interventions (coeditor, Springer, 2022), and Urban Labryrinths: Informal Settlements, Architecture, and Social Change in Latin America (coauthor, Routledge, 2024). • Join us for “Histories of Ecological Design; Co-habiting the Planet,” on Monday, 16 September, at 5:30PM, at DEC Forum, DEC Building (001) with Lydia Kallipoliti, Associate Professor and the Director of the MS in Advanced Architectural Design at Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning & Preservation. ?? To register & more information on your visit, here: https://lnkd.in/e5ssKSV3. Histories of Ecological Design’ presents conflicting definitions and concepts of architects anddesigners and the parallel histories of their intellectual positions toward environmental thought fromthe 19th century to today. To survey the formation of this field, the context is not exclusively examined chronologically, but also in connected worldviews, each rendering evolving perceptions of nature, itsrelation to culture, and the occupation of the planet by human and non-human subjects. The book showcases that ecological design starts with the reconceptualization of the world as acomplex system of flows rather than a discrete compilation of objects, which visual artist and theorist Gy?rgy Kepes has described as one of the fundamental reorientations of the 20th century. Lydia Kallipoliti is an architect, engineer, and scholar whose research focuses on the intersections ofarchitecture, technology, and environmental politics. The author of The Architecture of Closed Worlds (2018) and Histories of Ecological Design (2024). Her work has been awarded, published, and exhibited widely including the Venice Biennial, theIstanbul Design Biennial, the Shenzhen Biennial, the Oslo Architecture Trienalle, the LisbonTriennale, the Royal Academy of British Architects, the Storefront for Art and Architecture in New Yorkand the London Design Museum. She is head of ANAcycle research think tank and Head Co-Curator of the 2022 Tallinn ArchitectureBiennale. Kallipoliti holds a Diploma in Architecture and Engineering from AUTh in Greece, a Masterof Science (SMArchS) from MIT and a PhD from Princeton University. #CABE_lecture
