What Can Indonesia Share with the World? Knowledge Transfer as Cultural Diplomacy – Part 2 ? By Charlotte Cato & Diki Zumara, Lead Heart First ? Cultural diplomacy is more than just showcasing traditions—it is about bridging different values, knowledge, and experiences. For Indonesia, this opportunity can be seized by transferring cultural insights. Indonesia’s potential is enormous, but it requires a well-designed, sustainable program supported by robust infrastructure. ? It is undeniable that knowledge transfer requires a considerable amount of funding. However, cultural diplomacy should be viewed as an investment—not only in economic terms through tourism and the creative industry but also in building a positive national image, strengthening soft power, and expanding strategic networks with other countries. ? There are many areas that can be developed for cultural knowledge transfer. Here are some focus areas for Indonesia: ? Indonesian Language ? Many content creators from various countries are already using the Indonesian language as the central theme in their digital content. With its relatively easy-to-learn structure, the Indonesian language can serve as a gateway for a deeper understanding of Indonesia’s evolving culture. Approximately 198,000 learners in 56 countries are currently studying the Indonesian language (Medcom.id, 2024). Therefore, Indonesia could consider establishing Indonesian study centers in various countries—not just for academic purposes but also for practical applications. ? Culinary ? As discussed in a previous article, Indonesia’s rich culinary heritage—featuring dishes such as Rendang (the best world’s food in CNN’s World’s 50 Best Foods via wowshack.com, 2021), Nasi Goreng, and Gado-Gado—remains underappreciated on the global stage. Indonesia should take a cue from countries like Thailand, making their cuisine globally recognized within two decades. The government could collaborate with the private sector, local restaurants abroad, and even develop a network of franchise restaurants offering modernized Indonesian cuisine—akin to the example of Jollibee from the Philippines, which has gained global popularity through social media. ? Arts and Crafts ? When it comes to art, Indonesia’s beauty is indisputable. From batik, songket, wayang, to traditional performance, Indonesia boasts a cultural heritage spanning over 1,340 ethnic groups (Indonesiasentinel.com, 2024). A coordinated promotion through cultural exchanges and digital collaborations in the field of arts and crafts is needed. This effort must be supported by strong institutional backing and executed on a large scale to enhance global competitiveness and open up new economic opportunities through tourism and the export of creative products. ? Culture is more than identity; it’s a strategic asset for the future. How will Indonesia leverage its cultural diplomacy? ? #CulturalDiplomacy #Culture #Diplomacy #Language #Culinary #Art #Tourism #IndoMeInsight

  • From Culinary to Economy: How Cultural Diplomacy Can Be Indonesia’s Soft Power Advantage – Part 1 By Charlotte Cato & Diki Zumara, Lead Heart First Indonesia is like a sleeping giant on the global stage. With the fourth-largest population in the world (Worldometers.info, 2025) and a 16th-ranked nominal GDP (Statisticstimes.com, 2025), it has yet to emerge as a key international player. Globally, Indonesia remains relatively unknown compared to Singapore, the Philippines, Thailand, and other countries in the region. Ironically, despite being a vast country—stretching roughly the same distance as London to Istanbul—Indonesia is often overshadowed by Bali, a small province and island within the country. What’s the Problem? Indonesia is not lacking in potential. Its promotional strategies have not been as effective as they could be. Cultural diplomacy—the strategic use of arts, cuisine, language, and heritage to build a nation’s image—must be developed seriously through professional institutionalization Institutions like Germany’s Goethe-Institut and China’s Confucius Institute demonstrate how culture can serve as powerful soft power to enhance geopolitical and economic influence (Nye, 2004). Even Thailand, Indonesia’s neighbor, there was a 200% increase in tourism to Thailand since the government launched the Global Thai initiatives to increase interest in Thai cuisine in 2002 (Foodrepublic.com, 2023). Why Now? As the country with the second-largest ethnic diversity in the world, Indonesia must take concrete steps by identifying and refining its cultural icons through careful curation. This is crucial for effective global branding. A grand design for tourism promotion, gastrodiplomacy, and the creative economy must be meticulously planned for long-term benefits, including attracting investment and boosting economic growth. While Thailand has gained global recognition for dishes like Pad Thai and Tom Yum, and Vietnam for Pho, Indonesia’s rich culinary heritage—featuring Rendang, Nasi Goreng, and Gado-Gado—remains underappreciated on the world stage. The establishment of Indonesian restaurants worldwide and large-scale culinary promotion must begin now. And this is just one aspect of cultural diplomacy. How Do We Make This Happen? Indonesia can gain global trust because cultural diplomacy has the power to create emotional connections between nations. It can serve as a showcase for Indonesia to present an alternative narrative of social harmony and livability, while countering stereotypes that occasionally associate the country with human rights issues or security instability. Cultural diplomacy requires a long-term blueprint, not just temporary projects. Indonesia should maximize its embassies and consulates as cultural centers. Indonesia’s cultural wealth is a treasure trove waiting to be shared. #CulturalDiplomacy #Culture #Diplomacy #Indonesia #Culinary #Tourism #Economy #SoftPower #IndoMeInsight

Fuel Independence Dream: Can Indonesia Make It? By Charlotte Cato & Diki Zumara, Lead Heart First In 2024 alone, according to Statistics Indonesia, Indonesia has spent a staggering USD 12.4 billion on importing fuel for light vehicles and USD 5.5 billion on diesel fuel (Detik Finance, 2025). This raises a critical question: Can Indonesia transition from its heavy reliance on fuel imports to achieving energy independence? What’s Happening? Under the Prabowo administration, it is confirmed that Indonesia’s state budget faces significant cuts, with fuel imports being the largest financial burden. With the Indonesian rupiah weakening against the US dollar, the nation’s spending on fuel imports is likely to increase. According to energy economist, Yayan Satyakti, fuel prices could surge by up to 50%, driven by macroeconomic instability (Kompas, 2024). According to Kata Data (2025), Prabowo has made a promise: “I believe that in the near future, we will no longer import fuel. Within 5 years, we will stop fuel imports altogether,” he stated. The Promise of Energy Self-Sufficiency Prabowo has pledged to achieve energy self-sufficiency, which he believes can be harnessed and industrialized for the nation’s prosperity. His administration also aims to shift from fossil fuel-based energy to renewable energy, with a strong push for electric vehicle (EV) industrialization. “Perhaps it needs to be verified, but this might be the largest energy project in the world that we are inaugurating today—3.2 gigawatts at once. Of course, this is the result of the collective efforts of the entire Indonesian nation, the hard work of our sons and daughters across all institutions and organizations,” said Prabowo. Challenges Ahead In 2023, the country was still dominated by internal combustion engine vehicles, with 126 million motorcycles, 19 million cars, and 7 million freight vehicles (Baketrans, 2023). The other problem is limited refining infrastructure, which can only process 700,000 to 800,000 barrels of crude oil per day—below the national demand of 1,500,000 barrels per day (Tempo.co, 2025). Fuel Subsidy The Indonesian government runs an extensive fuel subsidy program to keep fuel affordable, with a 2025 state budget of IDR 114 trillion (USD 6.9 billion) for fuel: 'Pertalite' – RON 90 gasoline and 'Solar' – for diesel, and LPG (VOI, 2024). Fuel subsidies are a politically sensitive, as seen in 2022 when the government raised fuel prices by 30% due to fiscal pressures amid global oil price surges following the Russia-Ukraine conflict, sparking protests across major cities (Reuters, 2022; The Jakarta Post, 2022). Would you agree that the government subsidized petrol and its sensitivity to political stability is one of the main reasons for wanting fuel independence? #Indonesia #Investment #Fuel #EV #Economy #Energy #Gas #Petroleum #Prabowo #IndoMeInsight

Did you know that Indonesia was once the center of the world’s spice trade? The Spice Islands, particularly the Banda Islands and parts of the Maluku archipelago, were home to some of the most valuable commodities of the 16th century, such as: nutmeg, mace, and cloves. For centuries, traders from China, Arabia, and India sailed to these islands, making them a melting pot of cultural exchange. But when the Portuguese, Dutch, and British arrived, everything changed! Today, the legacy of the Spice Islands lives on, not just in history books, but in the vibrant culture, cuisine, and traditions of Indonesia! ?? Ready to Invest in Indonesia? Here are the Top Opportunities in 2025 By Charlotte Cato & Diki Zumara, Lead Heart First ? What if you could invest in one of the world’s fastest-growing economies? As Indonesia’s economy continues to flourish, 2025 brings you an abundance of investment opportunities. With relatively promising economic growth between 5% and 5.1% in 2025 projected by the World Bank, IMF, and ADB, makes it one of the most attractive destinations for investors. Below are some of the top investment sectors that could define what you need to get started. Digital Economy: A Tech Boom in Progress With over 185.3 million internet users and the largest projected e-commerce transactions in Asia-Pacific for USD 137.5 billion by 2025, Indonesia’s digital economy is a juggernaut (Datareportal.com, 2024; ITA, 2022). These figures create a promising environment for fintech innovations, digital marketplaces, and other emerging business models. Supporting MSME growth through digital technology skills can also be significant for benefiting businesses. Renewable Energy and Green Economy Indonesia is exceptionally rich in geothermal, wind, solar, and hydropower resources. The government’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2060 opens vast investment opportunities in renewable energy projects (IEA, 2022). Indonesia presents an ideal environment for green economy investments, offering tax incentives for various eco-friendly initiatives. Property and Infrastructure The property and housing market is flourishing, driven by rapid urbanization and a growing middle class. With appealing real estate growth, investments in hotels, villas, and mixed-use projects present promising opportunities. Infrastructure improvements by government, including transportation networks, commercial buildings, and urban facilities, are further supported by public-private partnerships. The ongoing development of Indonesia's new capital city, Nusantara, in Kalimantan, also presents a strategic investment opportunity. Additionally, the 21 Special Economic Zones (KEK), including Bali, Mandalika, Batam, Morotai (Maluku), and Kendal (Central Java), continue to attract investors with significant growth potential (DDTC News, 2024). Electric Vehicles Indonesia's manufacturing sector is poised for significant growth, with substantial opportunities emerging in the electric vehicle (EV) industry. Leveraging its massive nickel production, which surged by an impressive 53% year-on-year in 2023, Indonesia aims to become one of the top three global producers of EV batteries by 2027 (Nickel Institute, 2024). The government has set an ambitious target of reaching 2.5 million EV users by 2025 (Nickel Institute, 2024). How curious are you to invest in Indonesia? Which sector will you invest in to secure your future? #Indonesia #Investment #Sustainability #EV #Economy #Digital #Business #Energy #Fintech #Property #Green #Infrastructure #Prabowo #Jakarta #Nusantara #IndoMeInsight

Why 2025 Could Be a Game-Changer for Indonesia’s Economy? By Charlotte Cato & Diki Zumara, Lead Heart First “The president stated that in 2025, we should cultivate a sense of optimism in sustaining the economy to make it stronger, more resilient, and ensure fair prosperity for the people despite the unpredictable global economy,” –Sri Mulyani, Minister of Finance. We have just welcomed the year 2025 with a mix of caution and enthusiasm. Global economic uncertainties remain, yet Indonesia, known for its resilience over the past decade is not exempt from significant challenges. The nation's position at a critical juncture raises questions: How will Indonesia navigate the shifting currents of global politics? What impact will the political transition at the end of 2024 have? Leading global financial institutions such as the World Bank, IMF, and ADB project Indonesia's economy to grow between 5% and 5.1% in 2025. This forecast is slightly below the government's target of 5.2% as outlined in the 2025 state budget, which emphasizes the commitment to economic and social development, addressing job creation, inflation, and poverty (Setkab.go.id, 2024). The figure also remains relatively stable compared to 2024, which recorded a cumulative growth rate of 5.03% in the third quarter (C-to-C) (BPS, 2024). This growth still surpasses the global average of 3.2% and the projected ASEAN regional growth of 4.7% (IMF, 2025). This positions remarks Indonesia as a resilient player within the Southeast Asia region, showing its potential to attract FDI and enhance domestic consumption. Indonesia underwent a leadership transition in October 2024, with former President Joko Widodo succeeded by President Prabowo Subianto. Prabowo campaigned on promises to continue and refine key policies from the previous administration. His agenda includes boosting state revenue through taxation, investment, and downstream industries. However, public concerns have arisen since late 2024, particularly regarding the proposed increase in the Value Added Tax (VAT) to 12%. While Minister of Finance, Sri Mulyani, clarified that the increase this year would apply only to luxury goods, the policy has sparked public debate, with fears that it could drive broader price hikes across essential goods. Indonesia also poised to confront challenges that can affects its position, including disruptions to food supply chains, rising military tensions in key regions, and the potential for a new trade war following the re-election of Donald Trump as U.S. President. These factors may exert additional pressure on Indonesia’s economy, which relies heavily on exports and stable household consumption. Will 2025 be Indonesia's breakthrough year? Which opportunities are you most prepared to seize? #Indonesia #Investment #Sustainability #EV #Economy #Digital #Business #Energy #Fintech #Property #Prabowo #Jakarta #Nusantara #IndoMeInsight
