Assistant Professor Youngjin Hwang, along with collaborators from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, has developed HydroSIP—a system that transforms the way buildings manage heating and cooling. This patented technology features a unique double-sided hydronic layer that adjusts thermal resistance based on climate changes, allowing buildings to automatically adapt to varying weather conditions. Not only does HydroSIP enhance energy efficiency, but it also directly harvests solar energy, turning a building's exterior into an active energy manager. This innovation could play a major role in reducing carbon emissions and energy use, paving the way for a more sustainable future. https://lnkd.in/g28sJnMr

Meet our newest Jeanne and John Rowe Fellow: Sydney Rose Maubert! Sydney's research shines a spotlight on the architectural contributions of marginalized Afro-Indigenous communities in the southern U.S. and Caribbean. This fall, she’s bringing her expertise to Illinois Tech’s College of Architecture to explore how the Great Migration shaped Chicago's public housing, diving into the cultural and material influences often left out of mainstream narratives. From examining the Gullah and Geechee people to uncovering the history of the Black Seminoles, Sydney's work connects the past to the present, revealing how public policy has reshaped American landscapes. Join us in welcoming her as she inspires our students and continues her impactful research! https://lnkd.in/gnB6upkQ

At the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey, Associate Professor Sean Keller is delving into a critical chapter of architectural history. As a 2024–2025 fellow, Keller is exploring the iconic architecture and political history of the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, with a focus on the design of the Olympic complex. This work, which he is co-authoring with his spouse and collaborator Christine Mehring, reflects the post-war ambitions of West Germany to present itself as a new nation, offering a fresh perspective on both architecture and history. Keller’s research aligns with the Institute’s long tradition of welcoming distinguished scholars, and his fellowship is a testament to the significance of his work in architectural history. As he embarks on this journey, he’s reflecting on the innovative, anti-monumental designs of the Olympics’ venues—symbolizing a pivotal moment in Germany’s transformation https://lnkd.in/gEw2rEUM #IllinoisTech #Architecture #ArchitecturalHistory

Congratulations to Brendan Hall (MLA/M.Arch., 4th Year) on being selected for the prestigious Landscape Architecture Foundation Ignite program! This incredible multi-year program by the Landscape Architecture Foundation offers an annual $10,000 scholarship, a paid summer internship, and ongoing mentorship, supporting Black, Indigenous, and students of color in landscape architecture. Brendan is one of only five students nationwide chosen to join this impactful initiative. With a background in political science and experience working on public safety initiatives in Chicago, Brendan’s path to landscape architecture was inspired by the transformative potential of spaces like Jeanne Gang's Polis Station, which reimagines precincts as community-centered environments. Through Ignite, Brendan’s vision to combine public policy and sustainable design is coming to life. His dream? Acquiring vacant properties across Chicago to create spaces that inspire positive change, reduce crime, and enhance mental well-being. Join us in celebrating Brendan’s journey and future impact on inclusive, sustainable design! https://lnkd.in/d_AyfXc3
