Reflecting on my time at #COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, where I had the pleasure of meeting many of our public and private sector partners and attending several insightful events focused on climate and health. Here are a few takeaways from these conversations:? ?? ?? The connection between health and climate is undeniable. Climate change exacerbates health challenges, from increasing the spread of infectious diseases to impacting food security and clean water access. However, technology offers a beacon of hope. For instance, telemedicine and mobile health platforms are revolutionizing healthcare delivery, making it accessible to remote and underserved populations. These technologies not only improve health outcomes but can also reduce the carbon footprint associated with traditional healthcare infrastructure.? ?? ?? Disruptive technologies are key to sustaining and accelerating our progress. Research estimates that 35%-45% of emissions reduction by 2050 will come from technologies not yet at commercial scale. Furthermore, advanced data analytics, IoT, and AI have become pivotal in fostering resilience in vulnerable communities by enabling better prediction and response to climate-related events.? ?? ?? Significant financial private sector investments are required to harness the potential of the private sector. Development financial institutions like IFC play a key role in bringing and mobilizing much-needed capital and know-how. Over the past two decades, IFC has invested close to $10 billion in private sector health companies to strengthen availability and quality of care and medical supplies, and over $3 billion to date in Venture Capital to support disruptive technologies and innovative startups across multiple sectors.? ?? By working together, the public and private sectors can unlock the full potential of innovative technology solutions, driving meaningful change and creating a healthier, more sustainable world for everyone.? ?? It was a privilege to moderate the IFC panel “How the Private Sector Can Lead on the Climate-Health Nexus” at #COP29. It is expected that by 2030, the global health workforce will face a shortfall of nearly 10 million. The World Bank published a blog on four ways to bridge this gap, "To achieve the World Bank’s goal to reach 1.5 billion people with quality health services by 2030, it will be key to address health worker shortages through targeted funding, expertise, and partnerships." Here’s the wrap-up of some of the key discussions: ? At the “Mission 300: Bringing Electricity to 300 million Africans through Innovation and Partnerships,” I highlighted the need for private sector investment, as the public sector alone can’t meet the financing needs. Read: https://lnkd.in/eBqTi6BD.) ?During the discussion on “Unlocking institutional capital for the climate transition in emerging markets,” hosted by ILX, we noted that MDBs must deepen their collaboration more than ever, from developing products to measuring impact. That’s critical, as we explore ways to attract new investment sources, including from institutional investors, who manage hundreds of trillions in assets. ?During the panel session on “Equity Financing Gap in EMDEs,” we emphasized the critical role of equity investments in driving growth in EMDEs. The global equity gap is estimated at $12.3 trillion. Equity financing can help enhance risk-sharing through public-private partnerships and optimizing scarce public funds. However, challenges include foreign exchange risk and regulatory or policy uncertainties. To address these, we are testing our capacity to support governments through our M300 initiative and developing a country-level, tranched FX risk-sharing facility, which we aim to pilot soon. We look forward to working with our partners, including Allied Capital Partners (ACP) and Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ). ?During the roundtable hosted by Industrial Transition Accelerator (ITA) on creating demand-stimulating policies to accelerate green industrial projects, we pointed out the need to decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors, such as cement and steel. This requires unlocking large-scale financing, stimulating demand for low-carbon products, and creating an enabling environment through public and private sector collaboration. In Africa, 19 of the 20 countries with the highest rates of cervical cancer are in sub-Saharan Africa. The World Bank recently published a blog on the urgent need to scale up HPV vaccines in Africa, which reduces the risk of developing cervical cancer by 90 percent, "HPV vaccination provides a path towards eliminating cervical cancer entirely and is already part of the routine immunization schedules in 29 out of the 54 African countries."
