The IDeAS Composites NRT is pioneering AI-driven inverse design for advanced and sustainable composites, integrating machine learning, digital life cycle (DLC) modeling, and high-fidelity simulations to revolutionize material architectures and manufacturing processes. This interdisciplinary program brings together experts in materials science, AI, mechanical engineering, and learning sciences to train the next generation of engineers through project-based learning, industry partnerships, and AI-integrated curriculum. By leveraging variational autoencoders (VAE) and ProcessGAN, we optimize composite design for automotive, aerospace, and defense applications, while fostering diversity and inclusion through strategic partnerships with HBCUs and veteran-serving institutions. Our mission is to equip graduates with the skills, knowledge, and cross-disciplinary expertise to lead innovation in AI-powered composites for a sustainable and high-performance future.

A special shoutout to?Xiaoyan Han a Graduate Research Assistant at Clemson University and an IDeAS NRT Scholar. Her Work in IDeAS NRT: Xiaoyan Han is working on a?collaborative project that leverages AI models to discover new materials a true intersection of disciplines. The multidisciplinary courses?in the NRT program, such as Machine Learning and AI-Inverse have strengthened her modeling skills and deepened her research background. These have helped enhance the accuracy and reliability of AI-driven material predictions. ???The Woman Researcher Who Inspired Her: Xiaoyan draws inspiration from Tu Youyou, the 2015 Nobel Laureate, whose groundbreaking discovery of artemisinin?revolutionized malaria treatment. Tu Youyou’s story has shown me that women can also do fantastic research and make outstanding contributions to science. ???A Moment of Pride: “One of my proudest moments was when I applied the knowledge from courses to solve a real-world problem. I built a robust AI model that makes reliable predictions, helping to save both time and resources.?Seeing my research translate into practical impact was incredibly fulfilling. ?? ???Hot off the Press!??? We’re kicking off #TechTuesday?with some exciting news - the first AIM EFRC publication of 2025!??? Title: A novel laser light absorption model for composite materials in the context of laser ultrasonic testing Journal: Optik - International Journal for Light and Electron Optics Read the full paper here:?https://lnkd.in/gHsRvp52 ???What’s this about? This study presents a novel analytical model for understanding the interaction between laser light and fiber-reinforced composite materials. Unlike conventional models, this approach considers the distinct optical properties of both the matrix and the fibers, providing more precise insights into how laser light is absorbed by composite materials. The findings are striking: the new model predicts a temperature spike at the fiber-epoxy interface, offering an explanation for experimental observations that traditional models failed to capture. It clarifies why Nd:YAG lasers exhibit a lower ablation threshold despite having minimal absorption in the epoxy layer. Additionally, the model significantly improves our understanding of how laser light, across different wavelengths, interacts with composite materials of varying layer thicknesses. Notably, it also reveals that thicker epoxy layers result in lower temperatures but higher displacement amplitudes—an ideal condition for testing purposes. ???Why does it matter? This work helps push forward high-fidelity modeling of composite materials, which is key to the AIM EFRC's mission. Understanding Material-Process-Microstructure-Performance (MP2) relationships is critical as we look to create more efficient, sustainable materials for the future. Relevance to AIM for Composites: This breakthrough directly supports AIM for Composites by providing enhanced predictive capabilities for composite behavior under laser testing. The new insights not only refine testing methodologies but also empower AIM’s strategic initiatives to innovate and optimize composite material design for a range of high-performance applications. Last week, I had the incredible opportunity to present my work at Clemson University for the All Hands Meeting of Artificially Intelligent Manufacturing (AIM) Paradigm for Composites EFRC Center, focusing on a multi-fidelity approach to predicting warpage in injection molding ?????. Injection molding serves as one of the key test beds in the AIM for Composites project, and it was a privilege to share our progress and insights with the broader research community ????.
