A summary of the day given by Piers: ? “At Carrington Power Station, we learned about plans for burning hydrogen as a back-up, generating low carbon electricity when the wind isn’t blowing.? "Hydrogen has an important role to play in electricity generation and heavy industry. Kellogg’s and HyNet power breakfast with hydrogen-fuelled manufacturing! We've partnered with Kellanova to produce Corn Flakes, Bran Flakes, Special K and Rice Krispies in a toasting oven powered by hydrogen. As Hydrogen Week UK begins, the HyNet Industrial Fuel Switching team have swapped from natural gas to hydrogen at a Kellogg’s factory making it the first food manufacturer in the country to produce cereal using this method. The three-week demonstration, funded by Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, showcases the role that hydrogen can play supporting industrial decarbonisation and how it forms an important part of the Kellanova’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, as part of its Better Days promise. ???? Hydrogen-fuelled recycling? Yes! This week, we have been demonstrating how hydrogen can power the furnace that recycles aluminium at Novelis’ Latchford plant in Warrington. During the demonstrations, we used both 100% hydrogen and hydrogen-natural gas mixtures to show that both can safely fuel the furnace. In addition, we gathered comprehensive data to assess the impact on the product, process, operating environment, and plant emissions. Industry across the North West is watching closely as these trials provide confidence that organisations like Novelis could switch to hydrogen once it becomes available from HyNet—helping to further decarbonise industry in the region. This programme was undertaken in collaboration with Progressive Energy and supported by a ￡4.6 million grant from the UK Government's Industrial Fuel Switching Competition. #Hydrogen #Decarbonisation #Sustainability #Innovation #NetZero

?? Collaboration for Net Zero ?? Last week, we hosted the Environment Agency, Natural England, and Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru / Natural Resources Wales at HyNet. Their role in permitting, timing, and coordination is crucial to delivering low-carbon infrastructure. Led by Chris Taylor, Head of Planning and Consents, the visit covered key sites like Heidelberg Materials and EET, showcasing our decarbonisation efforts. Bringing all three regulators together highlighted the need for collaboration and clear communication to drive HyNet forward. #NetZero #Decarbonisation

Apprenticeships, such as those offered by the Engineering College in Birkenhead, will be crucial to delivering HyNet projects. The College is hosting an Open Evening on Thursday 13th February to give potential apprentices a taste of what enrolling there can offer. There are pathways for welders, pipefitters and electricians, with each trade vital in building the pipelines and plants needed to deliver clean energy across the region. Book at the link below.

HyNet’s hydrogen production partner, EET Hydrogen, has officially signed a contract to construct a low carbon hydrogen production plant (HPP1) ENKA ?n?aat ve Sanayi A.?.! The contract will cover engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) of the new plant at the EET Fuels Stanlow Manufacturing Complex in Ellesmere Port in Cheshire. This project is HUGE for our region: ? Production of 350MW of low carbon hydrogen – right here in the North West ? Capturing 600,000 tonnes of CO? each year – the same as taking 250,000 cars off the road! ? Protecting thousands of jobs ? Growing our region's economy ??
