“Seeing the business’ commitment and passion for Net Zero and the way they are supporting well paid jobs in their communities was inspiring. Their plans very much align to our newly published Seventh Carbon Budget advice.“ - Piers Forster, Chair of the Climate Change Committee On the day Carbon Budget 7 was launched, we look back to last week when we hosted Piers Forster, Michael Lord and Louis Worthington from the CCC at ESB's Carrington Power Station. A summary of the day given by Piers: ? “At Carrington Power Station, we learned about plans for burning hydrogen as a back-up, generating low carbon electricity when the wind isn’t blowing.? "Hydrogen has an important role to play in electricity generation and heavy industry. "The Committee supports the Government’s planned investment in HyNet and are keen to see progress on consenting and financing to make sure projects are delivered at pace.” #hydrogen #CCS #CB7

Kellogg’s and HyNet power breakfast with hydrogen-fuelled manufacturing! We've partnered with Kellanova to produce Corn Flakes, Bran Flakes, Special K and Rice Krispies in a toasting oven powered by hydrogen. As Hydrogen Week UK begins, the HyNet Industrial Fuel Switching team have swapped from natural gas to hydrogen at a Kellogg’s factory making it the first food manufacturer in the country to produce cereal using this method. The three-week demonstration, funded by Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, showcases the role that hydrogen can play supporting industrial decarbonisation and how it forms an important part of the Kellanova’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, as part of its Better Days promise. ???? Hydrogen-fuelled recycling? Yes! This week, we have been demonstrating how hydrogen can power the furnace that recycles aluminium at Novelis’ Latchford plant in Warrington. During the demonstrations, we used both 100% hydrogen and hydrogen-natural gas mixtures to show that both can safely fuel the furnace. In addition, we gathered comprehensive data to assess the impact on the product, process, operating environment, and plant emissions. Industry across the North West is watching closely as these trials provide confidence that organisations like Novelis could switch to hydrogen once it becomes available from HyNet—helping to further decarbonise industry in the region. This programme was undertaken in collaboration with Progressive Energy and supported by a £4.6 million grant from the UK Government's Industrial Fuel Switching Competition. #Hydrogen #Decarbonisation #Sustainability #Innovation #NetZero
Today, we welcomed guests and industry partners to share our first findings from our hydrogen test phase here at Novelis Latchford. We have successfully tested the use of hydrogen on an industrial scale in one of our recycling furnaces. The tests were carried out in collaboration with Progressive Energy, an independent UK energy company. As part of the £1 billion Net Zero Innovation Portfolio and the wider regional HyNet project, we were supported with a grant of £4.6 million. Many thanks to the team of @Progressive Energy, to my colleagues Jeff Sleeman, Robert Madden and the entire team, who have meticulously prepared and implemented the trials over the past few months, with safety as the top priority. The use of hydrogen is not common in the aluminium industry today, so we are very proud to be one of the pioneers to have tested this in a real-world environment. The results from our trials will drive further research into the potential deployment of hydrogen in our recycling operations worldwide. Guests: Duncan Birtwistle, Mike Cairns-Terry, Adele Upton, Marta Csibra, Martin Shannon, Jane Gaston, Stephen Fitzsimons, Steven Broomhead, Paul Shelley. #ShapingASustainableWorldTogether #HydrogenPioneers #HyNet

?? Collaboration for Net Zero ?? Last week, we hosted the Environment Agency, Natural England, and Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru / Natural Resources Wales at HyNet. Their role in permitting, timing, and coordination is crucial to delivering low-carbon infrastructure. Led by Chris Taylor, Head of Planning and Consents, the visit covered key sites like Heidelberg Materials and EET, showcasing our decarbonisation efforts. Bringing all three regulators together highlighted the need for collaboration and clear communication to drive HyNet forward. #NetZero #Decarbonisation

Apprenticeships, such as those offered by the Engineering College in Birkenhead, will be crucial to delivering HyNet projects. The College is hosting an Open Evening on Thursday 13th February to give potential apprentices a taste of what enrolling there can offer. There are pathways for welders, pipefitters and electricians, with each trade vital in building the pipelines and plants needed to deliver clean energy across the region. Book at the link below.
Are you or a family member considering studying an engineering apprenticeship? On?Thursday 13th February 4PM-7PM, The Engineering College will be hosting an open evening at our facilities in Monks Ferry, where visitors will have the opportunity to: ? Get a taste of what engineering is all about ? Meet some of our employers and ask any questions ? Have a tour of our unique, world class workshops and classrooms At The Engineering College, we offer a range of apprenticeships in different pathways such as pipefitter, electrical, mechanical and many more. All shaped and developed by the demands of industry, led by our local employers. Based in Birkenhead, on the banks of the Mersey, we are an integral part of the local community, working with over 100 North West companies, including the likes of Balfour Beatty plc, Cammell Laird Shiprepairers & Shipbuilders Limited and Merseytravel. If you're interested in a career in engineering, please come along, say hello and see what the Engineering College can offer you! ?? Big news for job seekers and the North West! ?? HyNet’s hydrogen production partner, EET Hydrogen, has officially signed a contract to construct a low carbon hydrogen production plant (HPP1) ENKA ?n?aat ve Sanayi A.?.! The contract will cover engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) of the new plant at the EET Fuels Stanlow Manufacturing Complex in Ellesmere Port in Cheshire. This project is HUGE for our region: ? Production of 350MW of low carbon hydrogen – right here in the North West ? Capturing 600,000 tonnes of CO? each year – the same as taking 250,000 cars off the road! ? Protecting thousands of jobs ? Growing our region's economy ?? Interested in being part of the clean energy future? Keep an eye out for opportunities! ??? ?#HyNet #HydrogenJobs #CleanEnergy #Decarbonisation #NorthWestJobs
We’re thrilled to announce that EET Hydrogen has signed an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract with global engineering and construction firm ENKA ?n?aat ve Sanayi A.?. to deliver the HPP1 hydrogen production plant, based at the Stanlow Manufacturing Complex in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire. HPP1 is a groundbreaking project and a cornerstone of the HyNet Cluster, with a production capacity of 350MW and the ability to capture 600,000 tonnes of CO? annually - equivalent to taking 250,000 cars off the road. This is a major step forward in our mission to deliver 4GW of low carbon hydrogen capacity, decarbonising industrial operations across the North West, protecting thousands of jobs, and driving economic growth. ENKA was selected after a highly competitive tender, the team brings a proven track record in delivering complex projects, having completed over 580 contracts in 57 countries. Their expertise will be instrumental in delivering HPP1 on time and to the highest standards. Together, we’re driving industrial decarbonisation in the North West.
