The transition to renewable energy sources, such as offshore wind power, is essential for addressing global climate change, however, its intermittent nature poses integration challenges. Here's how hydrogen could be the key. ?? As part of the Hydrogen Innovation Initiative, Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult, published a report outlining an innovative approach to mitigating the intermittency of wind power by directly integrating electrolyser technologies with offshore wind turbines to produce green hydrogen. ?? This integration could provide a means to store excess wind energy as hydrogen, enhancing the overall efficiency and reliability of renewable energy systems. Through their review of existing and proposed industry projects, the team found that one of the most significant risks is the degradation of electrolysers when operated under variable power conditions. Further research reviewed failure modes and degradation mechanisms of different electrolyser technologies, highlighting their susceptibility to variable power inputs. A model was also developed to analyse wind power data, providing insights into operational challenges and mitigation strategies. ??
