Dr. Choate, DO is our local physician here in Columbia. He runs his practice in concert with Hattiesburg Clinic aka Columbia Family Clinic, and board certified in family medicine by the American Board of Family Medicine. I got to know the Doc after he began caring for our mom who's in her ninety. After about a year taking her to appointments, I found myself without a health care provider, so liking how he was taking care of mom, I also became a patient. Doc received his medical degree from William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine, and grow up in McComb, where he had bee inspired at a young age to study medicine by a local doctor, and serve people around him instead of taking off to far-a-way places. Before deciding on making Columbia his place of practice Doc completed his internship and residency in family medicine at Forrest General Hospital. We're proud to have him here in Columbia!

Plans run by the private insurers in the Medicare Advantage system are supposed to offer old and disabled people the same benefits they would get from traditional Medicare. The plans can be a bargain for people because they limit out-of-pocket expenses and often offer extra benefits such as dental care. As recipients get sicker, though, they may have more difficulty accessing services than people with traditional Medicare. That’s because the insurers actively manage the care, including requiring patients to get approval for certain services and limiting which hospitals and doctors patients can use. A Wall Street Journal analysis of Medicare data found a pattern of Medicare Advantage’s sickest patients dropping their privately run coverage just as their health needs soared. People in the final year of their lives left Medicare Advantage for traditional Medicare at double the rate of other enrollees from 2016 to 2022, the Journal’s analysis found. Those private-plan dropouts—300,075 during that time span—often had long hospital and nursing-home stays after they left, running up large bills that taxpayers, not their former insurers, had to pay. They cost the federal government an average of $218 a day during that period. That is more than seven times the cost of a typical Medicare recipient, and about twice the cost of other recipients in the last year of their lives. In an attempt to stimulate the #economy out of the #GreatDepression, President Roosevelt employed millions of out-of-work Americans to fix crumbling #infrastructure across the country. It was called the the #NewDeal, and its effect on #Poplarville last to this day. The Hospital was designated as a #WorksProgressAdministration (#WPA) project. Reports vary on how much funding was contributed to the renovation, however, it is clear from the dramatic transformation of the original hospital to the now #ColonialRevival structure funds directed to the project where indicative of the WPA. After the renovations to the #hospital, two of the town’s most influential #doctors moved in—Dr. H.B. Cowart from his practice on #MainStreet in the Old #Masonic Building, and Dr. James B. Davis from his original practice in #Tylertown, MS. Along with them came three #nurses, a #receptionist, and a freezer from Dr. Cowart’s original practice that served as the hospital’s “cash register” because many Poplarville #residents could not pay for their treatments with money, but with produce and meat.
