Call_for_Papers Special Issue: Emerging Practices and Technologies for the Other 23 Hours of Equidae Management (EPTOEM)
We are thrilled to include this new research study from Ireland's Thomas Dunbar in the February @hoofsearch !
?? New Publication?? ?? The Effect of Screw-In Studs on Equine Hoof and Limb Kinematics while Cantering and Jumping on an Artificial Surface ?? Open Access - https://lnkd.in/e2a_N7nX. ?? Summary: Studs are used to optimise hoof grip to prevent slip and enhance performance. Previous research has explored the effect of studs on a grass surface during canter, the influence of stud length on braking forces and the effect of restricted foot slip on bone strains. However, previous work has not addressed the influence of screw-in studs during canter and jumping on an artificial surface. This study demonstrates that canter kinematics were largely unaffected by stud use on an artificial surface; however, unexpectedly, some jumping parameters significantly improved. A significant reduction in the stance duration of the leading forelimb at jump landing is concerning as this may lead to higher braking forces in the distal limb, potentially resulting in an increased risk of overload injuries.
Watch for this in the February HoofSearch , but in the meantime... (The abstract is readable by all, but full article requires subscription access to British Equine Veterinary Association journals.)
For equine veterinarians interested in podiatry/hoof surgery, I would recommend reading this new case report in Equine Veterinary Education! Congratulations to Margot De Schryver for her publication, and thanks to co-authors Mounia Gruyaert and Els Raes: nice teamwork ?? ?? #equinepodiatry #equinehoofsurgery #specialistveterinarycare Faculty of Veterinary Medicine - Ghent University

Extremely happy to report that we have been awarded funding from Horseracing Alberta to study "in-race" stride parameters in Thoroughbred, Quarter Horse and Standardbred racing in Alberta, Canada. Across the three racing disciplines at Century Downs (Calgary) and Century Mile (Leduc) racetracks in Alberta, every horse in every race will be instrumented with our validated GPS data loggers and stride parameters calculated from start to finish. We will also conduct track surface measurements. The immediate goal of this undertaking, implemented through a PhD studentship, is to accurately document how stride characteristics change with racing conditions. Unlike similar efforts that are focusing on Thoroughbred racing only, we are expanding our research to all the three racing disciplines, hoping to provide more fundamental and transferrable insights. The ultimate aim is to implement this 'rich knowledge' into injury prediction models and to identify horses before they get injured. We sincerely thank Horseracing Alberta for this pledge which will allow us to conduct important work helping to reduce racehorse injury rates and improve racehorse welfare across Thoroughbred, Quarter Horse and Standardbred racing. https://lnkd.in/gcBvFvbD
It's time to re-draw the world map of #laminitis research: Brisbane...Kennett Square...Columbus...Potters Bar...Liverpool...Lexington...Now we need to add Starkville. Congratulations. MSU! https://lnkd.in/gtfT_FMe
Have we been doing saddle fitting all wrong all this time? New research summary from HoofSearch describes differences between how a saddle fits the standing horse vs the moving horse, and why saddle fit matters, above all. The study was done at the Royal Veterinary College and University of Southampton in the United Kingdom, and funded by the Worshipful Company of Saddlers. A quick research capsule report: What do we know about insulin fluctuations before and after road transport? When should horses have their insulin levels tested--and when should they not? Whether they are transporting horses previously diagnosed with #equinemetabolicsyndrome or not, horse owners should be aware of new research from the University of Kentucky, Waltham Petcare Science Institute Equine Studies Group and SPILLERS? horse feed (UK). Beyond the hoof: Racehorses may truly have a "gut feeling" about how they perform when they step out on the track. A new study from the UK's Newmarket Equine Hospital followed 52 Thoroughbreds over time to analyze the foals' gut microbiomes and then track the horses' performance and health as three-year-olds. The researchers tracked respiratory, gastrointestinal, orthopaedic and soft-tissue health events. What does this say about antibiotic administration early in life? The article was published in August in the Nature Scientific Reports open-access journal and is indexed and linked in the HoofSearch research report.
Share your thoughts and expertise! Researchers at The University of Edinburgh and The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies need input from #equineveterinarians and professional #farriers on hoof knowledge, current practices, terminology, and much more--with US sport horse farrier Jude Florio taking the lead. Target countries: professionals in the UK, Canada, USA, Australia, and New Zealand. Take a few minutes, make your voice heard, and thank you for sharing and encouraging others to participate. Survey closes July 15. More info: https://lnkd.in/e3YK4VB4
