It's all smiles at the end of our first #HLBaSETraining workshop this year! We were delighted to be joined by 21 incredible impact-led organisations across the UK and CE who sat down with their own team of junior lawyers and talked through their legal questions, which will be followed by 6 months of pro bono legal advice. Over 50 lawyers combined their legal experience to support the social enterprises on their varying queries, from TWO WHEELS FOR LIFE who work to ensure life-saving healthcare reaches people in remote parts of Africa, to Planet of the Grapes who upcycle grape waste into bio-materials for fashion and lifestyle industries. Huge thanks to all who participated and we now look forward to meeting our second cohort of organisations on Friday! #ProBono #LegalWorkshop #SocEnt #SocialImpact Nicola Evans Tobias Faber Adrian Walker Carolin Marx Yasmin Waljee OBE Fenella Chambers Dr. Marion Fischer Tom Walsh Camilla Fr?hlich Denisa Ismalaj Alfanar Venture Philanthropy Luminary Bakery VCSE Nutriri Microhive The Rivers Trust Scope 4 Nature Triangle Consulting Social Enterprise Ltd TWO WHEELS FOR LIFE Carlton Social and Bowling Club CIC Aquaintz Consulting J-040 Clean Something For Nothing? NEW: Why we're featuring Middle East social entrepreneurs in Pioneers Post this week The Editor's Post, by Julie Pybus In the northern city of Zgharta in Lebanon this week, one of the country’s biggest social enterprises, FabricAID, has delivered a tonne of clothes, carefully sorted to meet the needs of the 5,000 families who have fled there from the bombardments in the south of the country and the capital city Beirut. FabricAid, founded in 2018 by Omar Itani (pictured below), is a social enterprise success story in the Arab region, where fundraising is tough and there is little understanding of the business model. The recent escalation in conflict has meant the social enterprise has gone into emergency mode, working with NGOs and others to distribute emergency supplies to displaced people. We know from our global coverage of the impact economy that in times of conflict, social entrepreneurs and the people and organisations they work with are often well positioned to offer support where it’s needed, quickly and efficiently. But the impact these organisations make isn’t only important during times of disaster and tragedy. As a global community of impact pioneers, we can offer solidarity by understanding each other's work on a deeper level. So this week our?main feature (written by Anna Patton and Laura Joffre: link in comments - do check it out)?highlights the stories of several inspiring environmentally-focused enterprises working across the Middle East – including FabricAid, Flowless - Sustainable Solutions and Delta Oil. It’s a feature that the?Pioneers Post?team has been working on for some time, with our partners at Hogan Lovells, and we thought long and hard about whether it was appropriate to publish now. While the breaking news outlets focus on the bombing, the politics and the cost of oil, we’re taking a different perspective because we believe that these stories should still be told. We were all struck by something that Myrna Atalla, outgoing executive director of Middle Eastern funder Alfanar Venture Philanthropy, said about her reaction to the 7 October attacks last year and subsequent retaliations: “At a moment of unbelievable tragedy and loss, it can be hard to know what to do... sometimes the most disruptive thing we can do is stick to our mission and keep doing it.” At?Pioneers Post, we’re attempting to maintain contact with the entrepreneurs that we’ve interviewed and hoping they – alongside all members of the impact community operating in conflict zones – can stay safe during these difficult times. (This is an abbreviated version of this week's Editor's Post; full version in our newsletter and on our website.) #SocialEnterprise #ImpactInvesting #VenturePhilanthropy #SocialImpact
