?? As a former #GEOINTer, nothing makes me prouder than supporting solutions for real world problems in space. On October 21-25, I had the great honour and privilege of working with Mandala Space Ventures to deliver the 2024 #SoCal-UK Space Accelerator, funded by UK Space Agency. Nine UK startups took part in a weeklong programme of events including site tours of The Aerospace Corporation, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, VAST and Rocket Lab. Our Consul General, Paul Rennie, OBE hosted a VIP reception at the British Residence for the cohort alongside key industry representatives and local economic partners, including Lucius Martin, Deputy Mayor of Economic Development for the City of Long Beach and Felipe Cusnir, Executive Director of World Trade Center Long Beach. The programme culminated in Demo Day where the cohort had the opportunity to pitch to an audience featuring VCs, United States Space Force, U.S. Space Command, Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), The Aerospace Corporation, and other key industry players. Thanks to David Beck, Minh Jones, Drew "Murph" Busbee, Travis DeMeester, and everyone who helped make Demo Day a success. ?? Special thanks to Leon Alkalai, CEO of Mandala Space Ventures, Richard French, Vice President of Business Development and Strategy, Space Systems at Rocket Lab, as well as from David Caponio, Senior Vice President of Product and Business Development, Tristan Prejean, Associate Director of Business Development, David G. and Lucie Ravelojaona of Vast for the site tour! ?? Finally, a huge congratulations to the companies who participated in this year’s accelerator. I strongly believe that the journey to sustainable, inclusive economic growth is powered by clean energy. ?? The UK is living this story and, although the path isn’t always straightforward, there are signs for optimism. Earlier this week, The New York Times did a deep dive on the UK’s energy transition, featuring examples like: ? One British household saving £400 pounds a year on electricity bills through an Octopus Energy scheme that allows households located near renewable energy to directly benefit from discounted power bills. ? A third-generation fossil fuel worker now installing SSE Renewables batteries that store power when wind and solar generation exceeds demand. At the Department for Business and Trade, we work with companies and colleagues across government to enable and showcase these clean energy solutions. It’s great to see NYT’s Somini Sengupta visited the UK to explore these case studies up close after she attended our Energy Secretary’s Clean Energy Superpower Summit during New York Climate Week.

This week we celebrated 30 years of connections between San Francisco and London – both on and off a Virgin Atlantic plane. We raised a glass to a 40-year relationship between Virgin Atlantic and the US, and, more broadly, to British innovation and its impact on the world ?? ? The UK is putting growth and innovation at the heart of its agenda. Last month’s?International Investment Summit saw?foreign companies committing over £63Bn of private investment and the creation of over 38K new jobs in the UK. And, with the UK’s tech economy valued at over $1 trillion and rising, it follows the United States and China as the third largest tech economy in the world. ? The UK is also the first major economy to halve its emissions, having cut them by 50% between 1990 and 2022, while also growing its economy by almost 80 percent.?? ? Virgin Atlantic is reflecting that focus on growth, sustainability, and emerging tech,?using AI to enhance flight safety as well as unify, manage, and activate customer data for highly personalized experiences. And last year, Virgin Atlantic’s Flight 100 flew from London to New York completely powered by sustainable aviation fuels – the first of its kind. Their movement towards sustainable aviation fuel reflects the UK’s commitment to achieving netzero by 2050 – and in fact, Flight 100 and was achieved with UK government support.? Fantastic to celebrate these milestones. We look forward to the next 30 years of trans-Atlantic connections! ?
