In the latest post in our “Get to Know the Innovator” series, we’re celebrating Senior Research Scientist Bassem Tossoun. Here are Bassem’s thoughts about innovation. ?????????? ?????? ?????????????????? Born in Alexandria, Egypt, Bassem Tossoun moved with his family to Los Angeles, Calif., when he was six years old. As a child, he was fascinated by computers, often fixing them for friends. He went on to study electrical and computer engineering at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and then gained his PhD at the University of Virginia. He started an internship with HPE in 2018 and joined Hewlett Packard Labs the next year. Bassem now works in the Large-Scale Integrated Photonics (LSIP) lab, led by Dr. Ray Beausoleil. ???????? ???????????????????? ???????????????? ?????? ?????? ???????????? ???? ??????????? “Increasing workloads in data centers and high-performance computing are dominated by data and graph analytic applications aided by AI and machine learning (ML). As these ML models grow, they demand more computational resources for improved accuracy, though, at the expense of higher cost and power consumption. Typically, these data-intensive applications are handled by GPU-based artificial neural networks (ANNs) using the traditional von Neumann computing architecture. However, the well-known “von Neumann bottleneck” also fundamentally limits the speed and energy-efficiency of the data transferred between memory and the processor within a computer. Therefore, a fundamental reformation in computing architecture is required to be able to process deep learning algorithms with higher energy efficiency.” “My research focuses on developing an energy-efficient and scalable integrated optoelectronic hardware platform for next-generation AI accelerators. This field excites me because it investigates novel computing technologies and paradigms that could revolutionize computing and AI as a whole.” ?????? ???? ???????? ???????? ??????????????????? “The integration of novel electronics and photonic integrated circuits can push the frontiers of computing into new domains. Moreover, by designing systems which integrate memristor-based electronic circuits and photonics on the same chip, we enable unseen information processing capabilities in computing hardware for AI. More specifically, through the co-integration of electronics and photonics, versatile non-von Neumann computing circuits combining the strengths of both technologies can be made. The grand prospect in the long term is to build a system that integrates memory, computing and high-speed optical interconnects all on the same chip for the first time to vastly improve systems’ overall performance. While challenging, this technology has the potential to not only revolutionize AI but also 5G/6G, microwave photonics and quantum computing hardware by making it more scalable, sustainable, and cost-effective.”

Mainstream adoption of #quantum computing may be closer than most experts think. In a recent interview in Frontier Enterprise magazine, Hewlett Packard Labs Chief Architect Kirk Bresniker describes how Labs research is uncovering ways quantum can make a real impact in industrial uses. Kirk explains how Labs’ “holistic co-design” approach involves partnering with quantum software developers and applying Labs’ ability to simulate quantum systems to tackle real chemistry problems. Check out the interview here.

With #AI demanding more compute power, by 2026 data centers could require up to double the amount energy they consumed in 2022. This trend is putting pressure on operators to make data centers more sustainable. Labs is responding by partnering with business units across #HPE to bring together holistic solutions across innovation time horizons. To learn how HPE is researching ways to reconfigure systems, reallocate workloads and scale efficiencies across multiple data centers, read Cullen Bash’s article on the Behind the Scenes at Labs platform. https://lnkd.in/eZ-_3g3U

I had the great pleasure to serve on a conference panel last week focusing on an area of research critically important not only to science and industry but to enterprise #HPC customers at large. The conference was the 2024 Energy-Efficient Computing for Science Workshop, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Advanced Scientific Computing Research. Our panel included distinguished technologists from IBM, Nvidia, Intel, Micron, Cerebras and AMD. The discussion touched on the conference’s key themes: identifying the challenges for achieving #energy efficiency, integrating energy efficiency as a primary design consideration alongside performance and cost, and outlining long-term research strategies to address these challenges. Thank you to the DoE for advancing this important cause.

Developing an #AI ethics policy is a challenging task for every organization – particularly enterprises with operations and customers spanning multiple geographies. In a recent article Harvard Business Review showcased #HPE’s experience dealing with this challenge. The article reports that HPE’s AI Ethics is “ahead of the curve, formulating elaborate processes and structures for contextualizing AI ethics.” How did HPE take a global approach to AI ethics? What role did HPE’s AI Research Lab (a function headed by VP Paolo Faraboschi inside Hewlett Packard Labs) play in the policy’s success? How do HPE’s global and local teams partner to develop ethics-based solutions? And how does automation help drive the iteration process? See how HBR lays it all out.

Hewlett Packard Labs is celebrating a milestone event this summer: the 20-year anniversary of its Large-Scale Integrated Photonics Lab. During the past two decades, the lab has established a record of leadership and innovation in the technology community. Asked to highlight one piece of research that illustrates his lab’s success, Senior Vice President and Senior Fellow Ray Beausoleil chose a project that launched in 2007 and is exerting influence over the photonics field today. That award-winning project, started under the code name “Corona,” has introduced breakthrough technologies for critical government programs, helped launch a thriving photonics ecosystem, and, according to Beausoleil, set a high standard for innovation and collaboration at Labs. “That project illustrates how excited our lab is about sharing our work and collaborating with others,” Beausoleil said. “Innovation doesn’t happen in silos. That’s how it’s always worked for our team, and that’s how it works at Hewlett Packard Labs.” How did Corona get started? How did it help photonics become as influential as it is today? Read more about the Corona project here in Distinguished Technologist Marco Fiorentino’s article on Hewlett Packard Labs’ Behind the Scenes at Labs platform. https://hpe.to/6049mlYd3

In this episode of the Hewlett Packard Labs podcast “From Research to Reality,” Dejan Milojicic hosts Stefani Ewell, a Human Resources Business Partner at HPE. Stefani busts myths about HR and IT. She describes how HR is different from the way it is portrayed in the movies and on TV. In some ways, she says, HR is like IT; it is invisible until something breaks. But, according to Stefani, HR is much, much more. It is about improved employee experience and being a greater force for good. HR serves as a business partner to executives and employees, and it acts as an informed middleman. Scientists already play a vital role in society – providing impactful research that leads to new, creative solutions to business and civic challenges. But their benefit doesn’t have to end there. Scientists and engineers have the knowledge and the skills to play a vital role in local decision making. How can scientists and engineers get more involved in their communities? Arti G., Head of Technology Strategy & Evaluation at Hewlett Packard Labs, offers some tips in a Nature article here.

I'm excited to share the article I wrote for Nature, "Calling all scientists: show up in your local communities." #Scientists and #engineers can play a vital role in local decision-making: tackling public health issues, addressing climate change, or even integrating emerging technologies like autonomous vehicles. My journey with local civic engagement began when I joined a task force in City of Hayward. That experience, and my work with Engineers & Scientists Acting Locally (ESAL), showed me how impactful our skills can be when applied to local issues. I hope this piece inspires more of you to get involved in your communities. ?? Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/g8t7Knwx If you're passionate about making a difference locally, follow ESAL for inspiring stories, practical resources, and opportunities to use your expertise for community impact. Let’s stay connected and work to make a difference where it counts—the places where we live! #EngageLocal #scipol #scicomm Many thanks to Anne Pichon and Nature Portfolio for this opportunity.
