For Rory Pannkuk (MBA 2026), a former management consultant at Accenture, the case method teaches him to analyze situations, identify problems, and present solutions to a classroom of exceptionally smart classmates from diverse backgrounds and industries. The HBS Rock Center for Entrepreneurship and the HBS Social Enterprise Initiative recently hosted the second annual Demo Day, a showcase event for early-stage investors. Highlighting a wide variety of emerging student ventures, the event was led by Rock Center faculty members Julia Austin, Lindsay Hyde, Allison Mnookin, and Christina Wallace. Select student teams delivered three-minute pitches to a carefully curated group of early-stage institutional and angel investors. All the ventures are also semi-finalists in this year’s New Venture Competition (NVC), an annual pitch competition open to HBS MBA students and alumni founders with early-stage ventures. The ventures presenting at Demo Day used the opportunity to continue to develop their pitch for NVC with help and coaching from faculty, staff, and advisors.

Did you know Harvard Business School is the only top MBA program that requires all students to take an entrepreneurship class in their first year? It’s true. We do it because we believe entrepreneurial management is relevant to all leaders, whether or not they see themselves as a startup founder today. Which is why, in my final year as the co-course head of The Entrepreneurial Manager course, we launched a new series I lovingly call TEM Talks. And the inaugural guest speaker? None other than Amazon CEO Andy Jassy (HBS MBA 1997, natch) Andy spoke to a special class session of all 935 first-year MBA students about how his career has been shaped by entrepreneurial management as both a mindset and skillset. He started at Amazon just days after graduating HBS and quickly became Chief of Staff to Jeff Bezos. While in that role he identified an opportunity that became Amazon Web Services and he built that business into the juggernaut that it is today. Which is why it was no surprise when the Board chose him to succeed Bezos as CEO. It was an honor to ask him the hard hitting (we might even say "spicy") questions along with the slightly more fun and personal. Our students wanted to hear it all, from his reflections on the high-performance culture at Amazon, to his advice on the finding the next rocket ship to work for and whether his success has brought him happiness. Thanks to Andy for making the special trip and for Michael Skok for making the connection and moderating the event! More than one student told me it would be a “core memory” from their 2 years at HBS!

Yesterday, we celebrated our second annual Demo Day at Harvard Business School. This event showcases over two dozen student entrepreneurs to 40+ top investors from across the country. Throughout the afternoon, our students demonstrated how they are solving big problems across a wide range of industries from healthcare and energy to manufacturing and finance through innovative solutions adopting the latest technologies and strategies they’ve learned from our entrepreneurial programs. Congrats to all our students for nailing their 3-minute pitches and a huge thank you to the HBS Rock Center for Entrepreneurship team for organizing the event. Also, a big shout out to our faculty Christina Wallace (emcee extraordinaire), Allison Mnookin & Lindsay Hyde for partnering with me to do pitch coaching ahead of the event. You all go above and beyond to give our students the very best! ??
