To better serve communities and adapt to evolving health needs, we employ innovative strategies and solutions to increase public awareness. Our work in laboratories, field studies, and cohort studies has provided a foundation in environmental and occupational health, leading to tangible solutions that improve human health and the climate. The dedication within our Department to creating and advancing knowledge of harmful exposures and translating our discoveries into actions has ultimately improved people’s health. Join us on our mission to shape a healthier future through research, training, and EH health leadership. Together, we can empower the next generation of global health leaders and make a meaningful impact on environmental health and environmental justice.

A recent study presented at the American Heart Institute's #AHA24 Scientific Sessions co-authored by Dr. Barrak Alahmad and Dr. petros Koutrakis found that extreme heat could increase risk of atrial fibrillation (AFib) in patients with implanted cardiac devices. “AFib is becoming more prevalent both in the U.S. and globally, with its incidence rising at an alarming rate,” stated Dr. Alahmad, emphasizing the importance of researching AFib's relationship with our warming climate. I was fortunate to engage with colleagues from BU and Harvard this morning on a panel talking about the recent wildfires in the northeast, including information on considerations for protecting yourself and others from smoke exposure. Big thanks to Dr. Nadeau for spearheading the event and hoping to do more of this in the future! https://lnkd.in/eEuN4YSu

Today we hosted a panel discussion with Kari Nadeau, MD, PhD, Joseph Allen, DSc, MPH, Patrick Kinney, ScD, and Jennifer Stowell, PhD, MPH addressing Wildfire Smoke, Air Quality, and Your Health. As wildfires in the Northeast continue to impact air quality in Boston, New York, and other areas, learn from four public health experts to help understand the potential health impacts of wildfire smoke, how to know if you are at risk, and what to do to protect yourself and your family from potential harm. “As a consumer I feel like I can’t wait [for safer plastics], I want to minimize my own exposure,” said Dr. Mary Johnson in a recent Harvard Gazette podcast about the prevalence of #plastic in the world, and our bodies — and what to do about it. Dr. Johnson expressed that a lot more research needs to be done, but studies have proven microplastic exposure to be harmful to human health. Therefore, she states that products should be labeled better, “so people are more educated and can make better choices in trying to minimize their exposure to the plastics.” https://loom.ly/i9gqFYY

Lead in water lines affects millions of Americans, including in Tennessee where residents were recently warned of contamination concerns. At most risk are those "who consume a lot of water, pregnant women, infants on formula, children, and athletes," says Harvard Chan's Ronnie Levin. Ronnie also advises people to contact their utilities to have their water tested according to US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requirements. https://loom.ly/Y7lMq8s

Longer allergy seasons are “absolutely a thing that we are seeing more and more,” stated Dr. Kari Nadeau in a @GBH story on #ClimateChange and allergies. Dr. Nadeau explained that warmer temperatures as well as pollution from carbon emissions are effecting allergens. Additionally, the recent Massachusetts wildfires are impacting air quality and lung health. And, Dr. Nadeau stated, "both are heavy hitters in terms of increasing people’s lung and airway disease.” https://loom.ly/yAGmFiw
