There’s a STEM talent war being waged across the country.?To win some of those battles, Memphis business and education leaders understand that international students are key.?The Greater Memphis Chamber Chairman's Circle convened a meeting of these leaders to discuss the visa process and challenges and opportunities for bringing – and keeping – international talent in Memphis.?The group also discussed possible collaborations between higher education entities and the Chamber.?As one of the participants from the University of Memphis said, “The value proposition of Memphis, that’s what it comes down to for international students.”?Participants included representatives from Baker Donelson, Bank of America, Blue Suede Networks, Hyosung HICO LTD., Tate Computer Systems, Christian Brothers University, LeMoyne-Owen College, Rhodes College, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Christian Brothers University, University of Memphis and The University of Tennessee Health Science Center.
Attendees at the Chamber’s State of the Economy luncheon got an economist’s perspective on the national economy for 2024 – “a very good year for market investors” – and a bright outlook for 2025 from David Waddell, CEO and chief investment strategist for Waddell & Associates.?Waddell told attendees that reducing regulations is one way government can support businesses.?He pointed out that there were 10,000 pages of federal regulations in 1950, and there are 190,000 today.?Every page of regulation means compliance costs for businesses, so streamlining all those regulations could mean significant savings for businesses, he said.?Attendees also got a data-driven update on the local economy from Tecora Murray, executive director of the Greater Memphis Economic Research Group ???

State Senator Brent Taylor and State Representative John Gillespie were guests of the Chairman’s Circle Public Safety Committee.?Both legislators have a reputation for being tough on crime.?When asked what business leaders could do to help, both legislators suggested acknowledging the crime challenge and continuing to hold public safety officials accountable.?“Keep on selling Memphis,” Gillespie said.?“Yes, we have a crime problem.?But we’re holding those responsible accountable.?We’re not hiding from a problem like some other cities in the state are good at doing.?We acknowledge the challenge and are working to overcome it.”?
