On this day in 1948, "The Big Six" – leading figures of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC), including Kwame Nkrumah – were arrested and transferred to the Northern Territories. The then Governor, Sir Gerald Creasy believed they incited unrest following the February 28th riots, during which three ex-servicemen lost their lives. This event marked a turning point in the Gold Coast's path to independence, eventually leading to the formation of the CPP and Ghana's freedom in 1957.
