AND WE'RE LIVE! Welcome to Greenhouse Gas Removal Future Leaders Network. An initiative by CO?RE - The Greenhouse Gas Removal Hub, The Future Leaders Network is an agile and dynamic community founded with the aim of stimulating the next generation of greenhouse gas removal professionals in the UK. Our membership base is a diverse as the GGR solutions we work on. From peatlands to direct air capture, we are researchers, innovators, GGR solution developers, policy thinkers, consultants, corporates, and non-profits coming together to help shape the future of GGR in UK. The Network provides a space for the industry's emerging talents to convene, share ideas, and develop new perspectives whilst members benefit from access to funding, resources to support their own professional development, and opportunities to participate in collaborative ‘microfinance’ projects. As we are building this new industry, we believe peer-to-peer learning will be crucial in helping enrich opportunities for collaboration, not only within GGR but across climate action. The GGR Future Leaders Network (FLN) recently hosted an exciting 3-day GGR Demonstrator Roadshow at Aberystwyth University, bringing together 35 early career researchers (ECRs) and professionals across policy, startups, and #carbonmarkets for hands-on insights into land-based #GGR solutions. Through our FLN Microfinance Programme, we backed members Tom Previte and Ben Weaver-Hincks to put their Podcast mastery to work and Grounded was born, narrating the trials and tribulations of starting a biochar company. On Monday, a group of 35 Future Leaders were hosted by Drax Group for a site tour of Drax Power Station in Selby. Originally built to fire coal from Yorkshire coalfields, today the site has a different story, with its eye firmly on the future. Coal trolleys and buckets have been replaced by giant biomass storage domes (boasting a capacity of 90 kt tonnes each). These help to store the 7.5 Mt of biomass burned every year to supply dispatchable power to 4 million UK homes. Contributing to 5-8% of the UK's grid, Drax is a critical piece of national infrastructure. Drax weighs in as the largest decarbonisation project in the UK (since 2012, they have reduced Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 99%), and the company has also committed to net-negativity by removing 8 Mt by 2030. To finance these efforts, Drax relies on public subsidies, magnifying the spotlight that shines strongly on their actions. We are proud that we are able to offer our members experiences with such a unique level of access and insight. This visit was a key opportunity for the FLN to see the real challenges for large-scale GGR deployment and to scrutinise projects for themselves. Our tour was a stark reminder of the sheer scale and resources required for the energy transition. It also reminded us that GGR happens in different ways and at different scales, but one thing is for certain, that by 2030 this industry will have a significant impact on people and planet. Drax’s large-scale and highly centralised approach is difficult to compare and difficult to ignore. Thanks to Jack Turnham and all the Drax team for this unique opportunity
