?? GEDA members hosted the side event Bridging Data and Action in the Lead-up to COP29 at #UNGA79. Through two panels, the event offered an overview of the gender environment data landscape and then presented work on indicators and data methodologies of two members, including one of GEDA’s first small grants recipients.
?? Highlights:
- Open Data Watch highlighted that among all categories assessed for gender data availability and openness, environmental data ranks lowest globally, with small island developing states facing the largest gaps.?
- CK Collective shared their feminist oral history project, illustrating how they document environmental resilience stories while striving for communities to? retain ownership of their data.
- Women's Earth and Climate Action Network (WECAN) International Speak database documents thousands of women-led climate solutions from frontline communities, demonstrating that data must connect to real people and lived experiences in climate action.
- Population Council's studies in Bangladesh linking water salinity to maternal health outcomes exemplified the intersections between climate change, gender, and health that are often overlooked in policy.
And finally, La Ruta del Clima presented their work in Central America on developing new indicators to measure gender-specific loss and damage from climate events, including a new app for community-based data collection. This work is funded through one of GEDA’s first small grants! We’re proud to be able to support this project and others like it.
