MY COMPRESSOR IS OVERHEATING Deep Thoughts. Hello Team, Compressors can overheat by compressing what they have already compressed. Compressor regurgitation. How is that so? Compressing what you have already compressed. The suction and discharge valves in the compressor need to seal off in the compressor to keep this from happening. Trash or rust or slag can get caught up in the valve and hang the valve open. This will allow the compressor to have blow-by and leak. Taking the efficiency out of the compression process. This leaking leads to excessive heat build-up in the cylinder by pulling the gas that has been compressed, back into the cylinder to get compressed again, which depending on the gas (like Nitrogen), may overheat the compressor and burn-up the cylinder. Melting the rings and or burning off the paint. Gasses that have a high specific heat are prone to overheating the compressor. Air and Nitrogen (specific heat of 1.4) is an example I have seen compressors get so hot, that it burnt the paint off of the cylinder and head. Lots of times, it is leaking valves (trash hung up in the valve) that causes this. ALSO, if the valve hold-down screw is loose, which you will hear a knocking in the head area, can cause heat buildup Think outside the box. What is causing the heat build up??
