376 to 1. That’s the national student-to-counselor ratio in the U.S. For many students, that means missing out on the guidance they need to navigate their futures. When the pandemic hit, access to college resources and support became even more limited. #TheClassPBS documentary follows six high school seniors as they navigate college applications, life during COVID-19, and the impact of a support system. Their story highlights the systemic challenges many students face—challenges the foundation works to address. By supporting equitable access to education and opportunities, especially for those who need it most, we’re helping create a future where every student has the chance to succeed. The documentary from our partners Three Frame Media is available starting today on?PBS. https://lnkd.in/gtUkfQKr

This year, Alabama was the only state where fourth-graders' average math scores surpassed 2019. How did they make this happen? One clue is math coaches: specialists working in schools who make math more engaging and more concrete for kids. Teachers and coaches in Alabama are emphasizing fluency and multiple ways of solving math problems—just like teaching a language. More from NPR about the impact this makes: https://lnkd.in/es5NabC5

High school to college, college to career. Well-designed pathways are critical to ensuring all students can navigate their way to their education and career goals. That’s the focus of our Pathways strategy. Today, I am excited to share that Cheryl Hyman is joining the foundation as our new Pathways director. Cheryl has spent her career leading transformation in higher ed. Previously, she served as vice provost at Arizona State University, where she led programs like MyPath2ASU. She has a wealth of experience creating meaningful programs for students to succeed in their transition to college and, eventually, into well-paying, fulfilling jobs. As Pathways director, Cheryl will work to create opportunities for students to become competitive, skilled workers with the opportunities and resources they need to succeed. I’m thrilled to have her on the team. And thank you to Patrick Methvin for being an unswerving steward of the program as interim director. We are immensely lucky to have you on the team. I hope you will all join me in congratulating Cheryl and welcoming her to the Gates Foundation - United States team!? https://lnkd.in/gxbGkkvB

U.S. assistance programs,?such as PEPFAR, deliver life-saving medicine, medical care, and combat hunger and starvation. These programs protect the health of Americans, bolster U.S. national security, and build stronger economies. We are committed to working with the Administration on these issues and encourage them to ensure this critical funding continues immediately while their reviews are underway. https://lnkd.in/exMajY-W

Providing access to essential health care for the world’s most vulnerable people not only reflects America’s core values, it strengthens global stability, security, and prosperity. The World Health Organization plays a vital role in combatting health threats that impact everyone, including Americans, by preventing the spread of deadly diseases, coordinating responses to health emergencies, and implementing global health initiatives – saving millions of lives each year. We believe engaged U.S. leadership is essential to helping build a more effective and efficient global health system with the WHO playing a central role. As we look to the future, we will continue to make the case that instead of retreating, leaders in the United States should prioritize strengthening WHO’s capacity to address global health challenges, ensuring that U.S. investments continue to build a healthier, safer future for all.

When President Jimmy Carter left office, he quietly brought his leadership to the world of global health. For over fifty years, the former head of state traveled around the globe fighting to deliver basic healthcare and sanitation services to people in the most marginalized places. From Latin America to Africa, President Carter met with communities to find out their most dire health needs and lobbied with presidents, prime ministers, and even pharmaceutical companies to make healthcare more accessible. From negotiating ceasefires to helping nearly eradicate Guinea worm to making deals with pharmaceutical companies to donate drugs to fight river blindness, President Carter focused on specific solutions that each community needed to heal—and he never tied his name to any of these projects. Instead, he committed to uplifting the local leaders and community members who brought the work life.
