The World Health Organization plays a vital role in combatting health threats that impact everyone, including Americans, by preventing the spread of deadly diseases, coordinating responses to health emergencies, and implementing global health initiatives – saving millions of lives each year. We believe engaged U.S. leadership is essential to helping build a more effective and efficient global health system with the WHO playing a central role. As we look to the future, we will continue to make the case that instead of retreating, leaders in the United States should prioritize strengthening WHO’s capacity to address global health challenges, ensuring that U.S. investments continue to build a healthier, safer future for all.

When President Jimmy Carter left office, he quietly brought his leadership to the world of global health. For over fifty years, the former head of state traveled around the globe fighting to deliver basic healthcare and sanitation services to people in the most marginalized places. From Latin America to Africa, President Carter met with communities to find out their most dire health needs and lobbied with presidents, prime ministers, and even pharmaceutical companies to make healthcare more accessible. From negotiating ceasefires to helping nearly eradicate Guinea worm to making deals with pharmaceutical companies to donate drugs to fight river blindness, President Carter focused on specific solutions that each community needed to heal—and he never tied his name to any of these projects. Instead, he committed to uplifting the local leaders and community members who brought the work life. We vaccinated 1 billion children between 2000-2020. Now, we aim to reach the next billion in half the time—aiming to protect 500 million children and save over 8 million lives between 2026-2030. With global support, our ambitious plan is within reach.

?? The World Health Organization's 2024 World Malaria Report underscores both hope and urgency in the fight against malaria. Over the past two decades, more than 12 million lives have been saved. But ongoing challenges like humanitarian crises, climate change, and drug and insecticide resistance threaten to undo these hard-won gains. Now is the time for urgent action, bold investments in transformative tools, and unwavering political will.
