There’s a household object that’s instrumental to global health—and it may not be what you think. ?? That’s right: toilets! Around the world, 3.5 billion people still lack access to proper sanitation. But here’s the good news: Scientists have developed toilets that can neutralize waste at the source, meaning there’s no need for sewage systems that are breeding grounds for diarrheal diseases like typhoid and rotavirus. The Global Youth Ambassador Program (YAP) is a five-month long (February-June) virtual program for high school students hosted by the Gates Foundation Discovery Center.
