Our Advisory Board members, representing various organizations and areas of expertise, play a pivotal role in shaping our strategic direction and mapping research priorities. In January, we hosted this committee for a dynamic two-day meeting to discuss research priorities, ways to enhance collaboration, and how to maximize our impact. Through structured sessions and dynamic group discussions, FSRI leaders and Advisory board members explored what's working well, identified areas for improvement, and mapped emerging trends that will shape fire safety research in the coming years. Join us at FDIC International to gain a working knowledge of battery fire science to clarify how and why batteries burn differently than traditional fuels, how incident location can impact hazards, and to frame the electric vehicle (EV) fire problem. That working knowledge will be used to summarize our findings assessing EV fire behavior and comparing it to modern gas-powered vehicle fire behavior. We will address whether EV fires are faster growing, bigger, and longer lasting and more likely to spread to the next vehicle or other exposures. The presentation will conclude with size-up and tactical considerations for EV fire incident response and best practices using the tools on every fire truck across the country: hoses, nozzles, and water. We would like to congratulate FSRI researchers Gavin Horn and Nicholas Dow and ULSE’s Summer Neumann (CIH, CAC, LRCIA) on the success of their article “Pilot Study on Fire Effluent Condensate from Full-Scale Residential Fires,” which was recently named one of the Top-10 Downloaded Papers in 2024 in the Fire Technology journal by Springer Nature. This work is part of our Wildland Urban Interface research project, which seeks to increase understanding of wildfire growth and spread to improve safety as they grow in size and frequency. Also on this list is the paper “On the Fire Hose Kickback Force in Solid Water Streams,” which FSRI researcher Richard Kesler co-authored while working with the Illinois Fire Service Institute.
