Oct. 11 is Forging Manufacturing Day. West Allis is home to Unit Forgings, a manufacturer of high-quality, closed-die forged steel components since 1918. "My name is Daniel Branagan and I was chosen to be a recipient of the Charles W. Finkl scholarship. I wanted to thank you for funding this scholarship and contributing to FIERF. I'm an incoming senior studying materials science and engineering at Michigan Tech. I've really enjoyed learning about materials, but I've especially enjoyed studying metals. I have had the chance to tour many different industrial facilities involved in metal production such as casting foundries, steel mills and industrial forges. The engineering that goes into ensuring production quality is really fascinating to me and I love seeing hot metal being formed. This year I've also had the chance to intern at California Steel Industries in steel production which has been an amazing experience. I first learned about FIERF last year after one of my professors asked if there would be interest in starting a forging club. It ended up taking a fairly long time to get everything approved by the school, so we weren't able to do any forging last semester. This upcoming semester we will be able to start forging and we'll be competing in the 2025 Forged in Steel competition. I'm the vice president of the club and I'm really excited to see what we can do. Besides working on our forging club, I have a lot going on next semester that I'm looking forward to. I'm a representative for the Undergraduate Student Government and I'm the chair of the student affairs committee. I'm planning on working on a lot of projects with my committee next semester to improve campus safety and accessibility. I also have a job working at the materials science and engineering learning center. I really enjoy the work there, it's a really fun challenge to explain materials science concepts in a way that's understandable to students who don't have a materials background.
