Rivers sculpt our landscapes, inspire creativity, and sustain diverse ecosystems. Doing regular water quality assessments is essential for identifying pollution sources and driving impactful conservation efforts. On this International Day of Action for Rivers, we celebrate and support the dedicated individuals and organizations working tirelessly to restore and preserve the health of our rivers for future generations.

While the term “fish stocking” may conjure up images of conservation measures deployed by fishery managers to stock endangered native fish, it can also refer to stocking predatory fish, including non-native species, for the sake of anglers. The United Kingdom has grappled with wastewater management problems for decades. Although sewage treatment in the 20th century allowed many rivers, including the tidal Thames, to have healthy fish populations, combined sewer overflows into rivers–most commonly during heavy rainfall–affected water quality and occasionally even killed fish. Human interaction has negatively impacted the hundreds of streams that run through Southern California. To evaluate and mitigate these negative impacts, local groups are monitoring the riparian habitats of these streams and are conducting water surveys that document rainbow trout populations and evaluate water quality. The thermal regime of coastal estuaries is heavily influenced by their neighboring waters. In the case of Lake Michigan, the Milwaukee Estuary’s temperature fluctuates rapidly, impacting the habitat suitability of the estuary for a variety of species that reside there or rely on the estuary as a spawning ground before moving to deeper waters.
