A story out now by AllAfrica Global Media’s Melody Chironda features insights from our PLOS Global Health analysis that looked at 19 countries to identify common drivers of public health progress. Robust political commitment is one of the most significant factors, according to analysis lead Dr. Nadia Akseer of Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. “90% of the 31 studies we looked at showed that this element was critical for achieving health progress." Each country took actions unique to their local context to establish strong government commitment. For example, Senegal established a Coordination Unit for the Fight Against Malnutrition, which was chaired by the prime minister’s office and worked to align the actions of the ministries of health, agriculture, and industry. Labo Diamniadio à IRESSEF’s Dr. Moussa Sarr highlighted how the common drivers aligned closely with data collected in #Exemplars in Global Health’s vaccine delivery research in Senegal. Senegal’s focus on community engagement—one of the eight drivers named in the analysis—was essential to increasing vaccination rates. Ethiopia’s successes in reducing neonatal and maternal mortality were made possible through engagement with rural communities. Some examples ?? The country’s 2003 Health Extension Program prioritized health care in rural communities enabled by Health Extension Workers who spent 75% of their time in communities, visiting homes, and providing people with health information and care. In 2009, the Ethiopian Ministry of Health also created the Integrated Emergency Surgery and Obstetrics cadre, which upskilled the health workforce and trained health workers to perform emergency obstetric surgeries, resulting in increased access to C-sections. Additional investments were made to reduce barriers to care, including a national plan in 2012 to distribute 1,250 ambulances to rural districts, as well as the scale-up of maternity waiting homes in 2015 to ensure this resource was available to all women, not just those who presented elevated risk.

Congratulations to University of Health Sciences, SickKids Centre for Global Child Health, Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI), and United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) for the successful dissemination of the Women's Health and Wellbeing results from the Cambodia case study. We look forward to publishing these findings later this year.
Researchers present the methodologies and key findings related to the research results of the study project on “The Exemplars in Women’s Health and Wellbeing (WHW)” - On February 27, 2025, following the opening ceremony of the dissemination workshop to present the research results on “The Exemplars in Women’s Health and Wellbeing (WHW)”, three key presentations were delivered: (1) WHW Exemplar Country Selection Methodology by Dr. Sacha St-Onge Ahmad, (2) Cambodia Case Study Methodology, and (3) Findings from Cambodia Case Study by Dr. Seang Kennarey. The event was honored by the presence of H.E. Prof. Saphonn Vonthanak, Advisor to the Ministry of Health and Rector of the University of Health Sciences (UHS); Prof. Zulfiqar Bhutta, Chair of the Centre for Global Child Health at SickKids Hospital in Toronto, Canada; and Prof. Shreelata Rao Seshadri, Director of the Ramalingaswami Centre for Equity and Social Determinants of Health at the Public Health Foundation of India. These significant presentations were attended by provincial maternal and child health program leaders, research officials from the Ministry of Women’s Affairs, the Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sports, the Minister of Social Affairs, Veterans and Youth Rehabilitation, the Ministry of Labor and Vocational Training, the Ministry of Environment, representatives from various non-governmental organizations working on women’s health and wellbeing, and students from UHS. Over 150 participants, including national and international guests, joined both in person and virtually at Raffles Hotel Le Royal. The research findings from “The Exemplars in Women’s Health and Wellbeing” project provided clear evidence of the Cambodian government's efforts in advancing women's health and wellbeing in the country. By assessing key indicators related to the improvement of women’s health—such as reductions in physical, psychological, and sexual violence against women, HIV transmission rates, and access to antenatal care services—the study highlighted Cambodia’s progress in the health sector. Compared to other countries in South Asia, East Asia, and the Pacific region, Cambodia has demonstrated strong outcomes in health, service utilization, and nutritional dimensions. #WomensHealth #CambodiaHealth #Research #GlobalHealth #UHS #MoWA #MoEYS #MoSVY #MLVT #MoE #SickKids #Canada #MOH #Cambodia

Morocco has achieved exceptional reductions in maternal and neonatal mortality. The country’s 2008 Maternal Mortality Reduction Acceleration Plan played an important role in this progress. The landmark plan removed user fees from emergency obstetric and newborn care, regardless of socioeconomic status or geography. The Acceleration Plan also helped Morocco improve the quality of maternal health care, including assessing and upgrading maternity facilities and improving facility readiness.

Exemplars in Global Health was born on the back of a napkin seven years ago. Since then, we've built a global coalition of partners dedicated to figuring out which countries have made leaps in solving health challenges, and what others can learn from them. Last month, 120+ leading international public health researchers joined our annual partner summit to discuss what's working in global health. Here's what they highlighted: ? Local context matters: Partners shared how subnational tailoring can help inform strategies to stop malaria transmission. ? Education has powerful ripple effects: New research on adolescent sexual and reproductive health and rights revealed how education is advancing the health of women and girls. ? Data allows for better decision-making: Partners shared how gathering timely, specific data helped them understand if, how, and why health programs were working.
