Hear from our ETM student, Lais Gerhards. Thanks for the shout out!
Weeks ago, I had the pleasure of virtually climbing Mount Everest. While I hope to have the chance to experience the real climb one day, this time it was through the Harvard Business School Leadership and Team Simulation: Everest V3, alongside my classmates. The simulation provided a unique and challenging environment to practice and observe various aspects of leadership in action. It required us to make critical decisions under pressure, set team priorities, and manage both individual and group needs in a high-stakes setting. One of the key leadership lessons I took away was the importance of clear communication. On the virtual mountain, aligning team members on goals and ensuring everyone understood each other's roles was crucial for our progress. This mirrors real-world scenarios where leaders must foster strong communication channels to prevent misunderstandings and keep projects on track. Another valuable aspect was learning to balance team welfare with goal achievement. The simulation forced us to weigh risks carefully, especially when it came to making tough decisions about resources and health, similar to managing risks in complex projects. Overall, this experience highlighted the importance of adaptability, clear communication, and strategic thinking. It was a great opportunity to put leadership skills into practice in a dynamic, simulated environment, preparing us for the challenges we may face in real-world leadership roles. Thank you, DocBach, for providing us with this simulation. It was an invaluable experience that deepened my understanding of leadership and equipped me with skills I can apply beyond the classroom. #Leadership #ClearCommunication #RiskManagement #TeamWork #Adaptability #GoalAchievement #StrategicThinking #WSU #ETM A view of the Nepalese side of Mount Everest from Khumbu, a region in northeastern Nepal. ?? Shaping the Future with Micro-Credentials in Engineering Management ?? Last week, I had the privilege of presenting at the ASEM - American Society for Engineering Management Conference in Virginia Beach, diving into a topic that is shaping the future of professional development: "Surveying the Landscape of Micro-Credentialing in Engineering Management." This presentation was based on a collaborative paper I co-authored with my esteemed colleagues: ?? Luna Magpili, PhD, CPEM – Washington State University ?? Ali Kucukozyigit, CPEM – Arizona State University ?? Kay Bachman, PhD, PMP – Washington State University Together, we explored the evolving role of micro-credentials in addressing the unique needs of engineering management professionals, highlighting their potential to: ? Enhance workforce agility ? Support lifelong learning ? Offer tailored pathways for skill development The discussion sparked insightful conversations about how micro-credentialing can complement traditional degree programs, particularly in dynamic and fast-paced industries like engineering and technology. ?? A big thank you to the attendees who joined the session and contributed to the engaging dialogue! Your perspectives continue to inspire innovation in our field. ?? Big News Coming Out Soon! Stay tuned for exciting updates from WSU Engineering and Technology Management regarding micro-credentials. #EngineeringManagement #ASEM2024 #MicroCredentials #LifelongLearning #HigherEducation #ProfessionalDevelopment #WSUETM

Operations Research & Analytics is the key to optimizing systems, improving decision-making, and tackling complex real-world challenges. One of the most powerful tools in this toolkit is Monte Carlo simulation—a technique that allows you to model uncertainty and assess risk in project cost estimation and budgeting. Example in Action: Imagine you're managing a large construction project with millions of dollars at stake. Predicting the final cost of the project isn’t easy. There are many variables at play—labor costs, material prices, and potential delays, each with its own uncertainty. Enter Monte Carlo simulation. By running thousands of simulations based on different possible scenarios (e.g., high material costs, labor shortages), Monte Carlo helps project managers estimate the probability distribution of the final project cost. Instead of offering a single estimate, Monte Carlo provides a range of potential outcomes and shows the likelihood of each one, allowing for better risk management and more informed decision-making. ? Companies like Bechtel or Skanska use Monte Carlo simulations to predict the likelihood of staying within budget for large, multi-year infrastructure projects like highways or skyscrapers, helping them prepare for financial risks and allocate resources more effectively.
