Advancing safer energy storage through science
关于我们
At the Electrochemical Safety Research Institute—one of five UL Research Institutes—we conduct fundamental scientific research to understand the safety and performance of energy technologies. Through our discovery-driven research, we innovate, test, model, and lay the foundation for electrochemical energy storage that is reliable and safe. In recent years, renewable energy technologies have emerged as one of the highest priority solutions to climate change. But they also present very real risks; for example, key chemicals inside lithium-ion batteries pose life-threatening harm if they aren’t manufactured, stored, and recycled correctly. Our scientists explore the safety and performance limits of storage batteries and other renewable energy technologies and investigate how we can overcome those limits safely. Our scientific research helps everyone in the energy storage and battery value chain ── from cell and battery manufacturers, suppliers, original equipment manufacturers, recyclers, shippers, and consumers ── understand the various safety issues associated with batteries in various applications, including electric vehicles and renewable energy storage systems. Knowledge and awareness about potential hazards associated with cell and battery materials, components, and end-user devices and systems, helps in minimizing risks and promotes adoption of best practices to improve safety. As our team works to advance safer energy storage through science, close collaboration with experts and like-minded partners in electrochemical safety research is essential if we are to address pressing global safety challenges and make progress toward a safer, more sustainable world.

We are pleased to introduce one of our newest team members, Dr. Devashish Salpekar (Dev), who has joined ESRI as a Research Scientist. After earning a Bachelor of Technology degree in materials science and metallurgical engineering from the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Bhopal, India, Dev completed a Master's degree and a Ph.D. in materials science and engineering from Rice University in Houston, Texas. Prior to joining ESRI, Dev completed his postdoctoral research in the Chemical Sciences and Engineering Division at Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois. His expertise in battery materials testing and characterization will add great value to ESRI's energy storage safety research team. Welcome to the team, Dev! #ESRI #WelcomeToTheTeam #Safety #EnergyStorage #Collaboration #Research #Sustainability #BatterySafety #MaterialsScience #Engineering

Standards play a vital role in ensuring safe and efficient societies, paving the way for achieving global sustainability objectives. ESRI's research on energy storage and energy generation technologies informs the development of new safety standards and revisions to existing ones. Join our Vice President and Executive Director, Dr. Judith Jeevarajan, at the “IEC International Standards: Enabling Innovation for a Sustainable Future” webinar on November 25 at 1:00 p.m. CEST. She will share insights on how IEC standards for secondary cells and batteries support sustainable innovation across industries, including energy efficiency and smart technologies, and how standardization in this field is advancing global sustainability goals, such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Joining Dr. Jeevarajan in the panel will be UL Standards & Engagement Vice President of International Standards Sonya Bird. Happy National STEM Day! Our ESRI team spent today at the Tech Fest Expo in Houston, educating hundreds of students about the circularity of lithium-ion battery recycling and STEM careers in the safety science field. Our "laboratory glove box" science experiment was one of the biggest hits at our booth, letting students measure the voltage of lithium-ion battery cells to check their state of charge while pretending to work with their hands inside the kind of containment device that you'd find in a real lab. Other hands-on activities and displays at our booth illustrated how materials are extracted from the Earth, manufactured into batteries, consumed in electronics, and ultimately recycled. Thank you, Tech Fest Live, for the opportunity to reach these students through the expo. #BeNiceToYourDevice #BatteryRecycling #lithiumionbatteries #batteries #Recycling #Recycle #Sustainability #Circularity #CircularEconomy #STEM #NationalSTEMDay #STEMeducation #STEMcareers #TechFestExpo Khalil Vinson UL Research Institutes
