This week, the president finally issued his long-anticipated executive order that claims to shut down the U.S. Department of Education. ?? But this is not a serious policy move—just more political theater. Here, our director Kevin Carey describes how this "short and substance-free" statement misrepresents America's global standing, disregards overwhelming public opposition, and vilifies the dedicated workers who protect student rights, manage financial aid, and uphold education standards. ?? We work to improve educational systems so all students have equitable access to high-quality learning opportunities.
关于我们
New America’s Education Policy program works to strengthen and improve the educational system so that all students have equitable access to high-quality learning that prepares them for college, careers, and civic life in a time of rapid technological and social change. We use original research and policy analysis to help solve the nation’s critical education problems, crafting objective analyses and suggesting new ideas for policymakers, educators, and the public at large. Our work explores the full range of educational opportunities, from early learning to primary and secondary education, college, and the workforce. We bring intentional and sustained attention to the students, families and communities that are least well-served by existing educational policies and practices.

This outstanding article by my friend and colleague Lisa Guernsey is a must read about the dangers of eliminating funding for museums and library services. I would add that in Philadelphia the library also serves as a place where kids go after school to do their homework and where their parents go to use the computers. And as the incredible CEO and President of the Association of Children's Museums, @ArthurAffleck noted, this also means that millions of kids who visit children's museums with their families will be directly impacted. Children's Museums are a lifeline that brings the highest quality out of school education to children across the country. The administration says that they care about families and children, but their actions speak louder than their words.
I wrote this week about the illegality of eliminating the Institute of Museum and Library Services — and what is at stake for students, families, and communities around the country. In 1982 the Supreme Court considered whether a “substantial state interest” was involved in preventing children of undocumented immigrants—who may be undocumented themselves—from attending public school. In the end, the court concluded that the costs associated with having a substantial part of society be uneducated and illiterate was too great to bear, to both the nation and the innocent children being harmed by the policy. A handful of states are considering taking away undocumented students' right to a free public education. Whose interest does this serve? Efforts to?undermine?Plyler?are often shrouded under the?guise?of relieving states of undue financial pressure caused by undocumented students. These efforts are often based on misconceptions about undocumented students and the “burden” they place on K–12 schools and taxpayers. Here are three facts people often get wrong about undocumented students ???? https://lnkd.in/eJPjqfXY

Earlier this week, we gathered teams from 6 community colleges partnering with New America to learn more about how community colleges support child care access for their student parents. We spent a day together digging into what kind of services can be built to support student parents' access to care, what programs and funding can be leveraged, and how to collect and use data that helps campuses understand and respond to student parents' needs. Thanks to the college teams for joining us, sharing their practices with other campuses, and to Theresa Anderson, Yoslin A., Miya T. Simpson, Ph.D., Susana Hines, Tia Caldwell for presenting on your work and expertise. To check out some of our writings and learnings from this project (with more to come), visit the link in the comments.
