Facing challenges in the Pittsburgh Public School system, his parents turned to homeschooling. Despite their efforts, John felt he lacked a comprehensive education and yearned for an authentic academic credential to pursue higher education. Discovering Literacy Pittsburgh marked a pivotal moment in his life. Reflecting on his experience, John shares, "Attending Literacy Pittsburgh was by far one of the best things I've ever done in my life." The compassionate staff and robust instruction empowered him to master essential mathematical concepts for the GED? test, establishing a strong foundation for his subsequent studies at the Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC). ?? With enhanced writing skills and renewed confidence, John successfully earned his GED? credential and pursued an associate degree in electrical engineering technology at CCAC. Today, he thrives as a computer programmer with aspirations to develop a fully-fledged video game and publish his own novel. Looking ahead, John is considering furthering his education at Carnegie Mellon University or the University of Pittsburgh, embodying the spirit of a lifelong learner and dreamer. ?? ?? Fab Friday Learner Spotlight: Luz Vidal ?? Meet Luz Vidal, who came to the U.S. from Colombia with a bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory science. However, the journey to achieving her dreams was filled with unexpected challenges. When her oldest daughter was diagnosed with cancer, Luz was faced not only with the emotional strain but also the difficulty of not speaking English. Determined to overcome these obstacles, Luz embarked on a journey to learn English. With the help of technology, such as apps, music, and videos, she practiced diligently and consistently. After six years, Luz is now fluent enough to navigate her world without an interpreter and confidently communicates at doctor visits. Luz now works as a learner’s coordinator at Literacy Delaware, where she supports others who are on their own educational paths. She is also a proud U.S. citizen, a symbol of her perseverance and strength. Luz’s Advice: "Find what excites you, make the necessary sacrifices to reach your goals, maintain a positive mindset, and practice, practice, practice!" Luz’s story highlights that with determination, the right mindset, and the power of adult education, anyone can transform their life. ?? Fab Friday Learner Success: Tracy James ?? Tracy James’ story is proof that it’s never too late to start anew and achieve your dreams. After relocating from the U.K. to the U.S., Tracy spent ten years as a Certified Nurse’s Assistant (CNA), dedicating her life to helping others. But when the pandemic created challenges in her personal and professional life, Tracy decided to pursue a new path. Tracy enrolled in the Windsor Adult Education program to earn her GED?. Despite the pandemic’s disruption, Tracy remained focused, borrowing a computer and continuing her studies virtually. Her persistence paid off when she earned her Connecticut High School Certification! Today, Tracy is using her experience to help others as the administrative assistant at Windsor Adult Education, guiding students toward the same success she achieved. Tracy is also continuing her education by pursuing Google Certification, demonstrating her commitment to ongoing growth. ? Tracy’s Message to Adult Learners: “It’s never too late to change your path.
