?? Strengthening International Cooperation in Drone Technology ?? A delegation from #Rwanda and #C?te d'Ivoire including representatives from economic associations and ministries in the aviation sector visited the DLR-Institut für Flugführung and the DLR-Institut für Flugsystemtechnik on #DLR site Braunschweig. The visit, organized in cooperation with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (#GIZ), took place within the framework of the Triangular Cooperation on Drones in Agriculture and Climate between Germany, Rwanda, and C?te d'Ivoire. ??? As part of the program, the delegation visited the UAS Laboratory (https://lnkd.in/eaT6JaSS) at the Institute of Flight Guidance and the Drone Workshop (https://lnkd.in/evTSH2HP) at the Institute of Flight Systems, where the visitors were introduced to current research and technological developments in unmanned aircraft systems (#UAS). The UAS Laboratory focuses on innovative solutions for the integration of drones into airspace, including air traffic management, autonomy, and flight safety. At the #Drone #Workshop, researchers presented advancements in drone design, system integration, and operational risk assessment, as well as ongoing projects in flight automation, environmental monitoring, and disaster response. ????? The collaboration aims to foster digital innovation and knowledge exchange, particularly in the areas of drone technology and sustainable agriculture, to address climate challenges and promote economic growth across Africa. #Recap of the ???????????????? ???????????? ???????????????? ???????????????????2025 ???? On February 12, the Upcoming Drones Windfarm (#UDW) Symposium, hosted by Deutsches Zentrum für Luft-und Raumfahrt e.V. and EnBW, took place in Hamburg. With 24 keynote speeches, followed by panel discussions and an engaged audience, the symposium became a true knowledge hub. As in previous editions in Hamburg, Amsterdam, and Cochstedt, the focus was once again on connecting the technological worlds of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (#UAS) and offshore wind energy. ?????For the first time, the results of the UDW research project were presented. Technology, legal and economic aspects were all given a platform — sparking deep discussions among about 100 attendees, enriched by interdisciplinary moderation and insightful audience questions. With this symposium, the #UDW research project is approaching its scheduled completion in March. However, the insights, connections, and discussions gained will continue to shape the path toward a commercial use case for UAS in offshore wind energy. ?? Drohnenflug - aber sicher! Eine German Heron-TP-Drohne der Bundeswehr (German Federal Armed Forces) ist von Schleswig (DE) nach Leeuwarden (NL) und wieder zurück geflogen. Das Besondere daran: Der Flug im Rahmen eines gemeinsamen Forschungsprojektes war europaweit der erste im oberen, für alle zug?nglichen Luftraum! Die Integration von unbemannten Flügen im zivilen Luftraum ist eine besondere Herausforderung. Deshalb ist dieser Flug ein Meilenstein für Europa, denn bisher gibt es nur wenige Erfahrungswerte. Die European Defence Agency und das DLR-Institut für Flugführung mit NLR - Netherlands Aerospace Centre und die Bundeswehr (German Federal Armed Forces) legen mit diesem erfolgreichen Drohneneinsatz den Grundstein für zivile und milit?rische Vorhaben dieser Art - unterstützt von DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH und EUROCONTROL. First U-AGREE Stakeholder Workshop Sincere thanks to all participants who joined the U-AGREE project team at EUROCONTROL Brussels for our first #Stakeholder #Workshop on Assessing Risk within U-space! Their expertise contributed greatly to the discussions on risk assessment methodologies for #UAS operations.?? ?? Key topics covered during the workshop: ? Airspace risk assessment ? Operational scenarios & use cases ? U-space in the context of SORA ? U-space-based risk mitigation The SESAR Joint Undertaking project U-AGREE seeks the contributions and the expertise of the U-space stakeholders to focus on the research needs for an airspace risk assessment well fitted to the particularities of the U-space operations and its representative operations. From Deutsches Zentrum für Luft-und Raumfahrt e.V., our colleagues Miguel-ángel Fas-Millán and Joonas Lieb took part in the workshop. The DLR-Institut für Flugführung is leading the development of advanced mathematical air risk models and contributing expertise from its research into bird and drone collision impacts. Und zwar nicht nur visuell, sondern auch akustisch? ???? Um diese Ger?usche genauer zu analysieren, gibt es die neue Norm ISO 5305, die Messungen in Laborumgebungen beschreibt. Unsere Expertinnen und Experten der Abteilung Akustik haben in Kooperation mit dem Umweltbundesamt und dem DLR-Institut für Flugführung getestet, wie sich diese Norm in der Praxis umsetzen l?sst. In unserem gro?en Freifeldraum und unserem Fahrzeugakustikprüfstand (akustischer Halbfreifeldraum) wurden mehrere Drohnen fliegen gelassen und haben spannende Einblicke geliefert! ?? Building a Safer and More Efficient U-space Together Our colleagues Dr. Bianca Isabella Schuchardt and Felix Sievers from the DLR-Institut für Flugführung participated in the CORUS five Workshop at the CFIS - UPC (Polytechnic University of Catalonia) in Castelldefels, #Spain. This is part of the recent #CORUS project, a European initiative to provide Europe with a concept of operations (#ConOps) for the safe and secure integration of drones (U-space). Together with the other participating stakeholders, our team provided and gathered input across various workshop sessions on key U-space topics. This input will contribute to the development of the extended and matured fifth version of the U-space concept of operations, which is expected to be published by SESAR Joint Undertaking in 2026. The workshop focused on refining and prioritizing key research questions related to ATM and U-space operations, including: ? Flight rules & airspace management ? Integration & safety of AAM operations ? Economic & regulatory frameworks ? Cybersecurity & data integrity These sessions offered valuable insights into ensuring safe and efficient U-space operations. A special highlight: a live drone cage demonstration, where participants—including Felix Sievers—had the chance to take control and fly a drone in a U-space test environment! ???? DLR launches project to promote sustainable and innovative air mobility solutions The #IAM-#OSA (Innovative Air Mobility for Optimal Sustainability and Accessibility) project has officially started with a successful kick-off event in Braunschweig yesterday! ?? This initiative aims at developing innovative air mobility concepts that create modern, safe, secure, and sustainable air transport systems. It builds on #DLR's research on Urban Air Mobility (#UAM) and expands it to include regional and multimodal scenarios. IAM-OSA focuses on the efficient transport of passengers and goods by air, combining urban, regional, and international use cases into an intermodal transport network. Key elements such as operations, safety, security, and acoustics are central to the comprehensive evaluation of the IAM system. Building on the results of the #HorizonUAM project (2020–2023) https://lnkd.in/eZ3R_Eh7 , IAM-OSA extends the research scope by integrating new use cases and modeling future technologies. Spotlight on harmonising Europe‘s U-space The U-ELCOME DSD Project (U-space European COMmon dEpLoyment) focuses on safe integration of drones into the airspace while advancing the market for urban air mobility. Since its launch in 2022, 51 European partners have been working on this SESAR Joint Undertaking project to ensure interoperability and harmonisation of U-space services.?? #UELCOME is coordinated by EUROCONTROL. ?????The DLR-Institut für Flugführung is actively supporting the project's success. The team is developing processes and workshops that support the harmonisation of #Uspace services across Europe. Additionally, the institute is playing a key role in standardisation and regulatory efforts to ensure consistent implementation. A comprehensive manual for U-space implementation handbook is also being prepared to assist stakeholders in adopting these innovative solutions.
