#ColumbiaMed proudly recognizes Juneteenth as an official University holiday! To commemorate the day, Columbia University Irving Medical Center’s African, Black and Caribbean Employee Resource Group in collaboration with Columbia University School of Nursing’s Office of Diversity and Cultural Affairs, Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health's Office of Diversity, Culture & Inclusion,?and the Office of Equity, Diversity & Inclusion in the department of Columbia Psychiatry hosted a JUNETEENTH: Healing through the ARTS?celebration. Attendees enjoyed light bites, poetry and more while learning about the history of #Juneteenth and its significance. ? Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States by honoring the events of June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to inform enslaved African Americans that they were free and the Civil War was over.

Last week, our office had the privilege of participating in the great well-being fair. A variety of activities were offered, including Yoga and Zumba classes, aromatherapy, and massages, just to name a few. It was a great opportunity for participants to learn how they can contribute to their well-being and network with colleagues from all four schools! #CUIMC?#DiversityandInclusion?#DEI?#Belonging?#InclusionMatters

As we embark on the year ahead, Our new Chief Diversity Officer Alade S. McKen, Ph.D had a moment?to discuss his priorities for 2024. In recognition of Black History Month the?African, Black and Caribbean Employee Resource Group (ABC ERG) and the Office of Diversity & Cultural Affairs at Columbia University School of Nursing invite you to join a captivating movie screening of the documentary that unveils the extraordinary story of Freedom House Ambulance: The First Responders. The movie is based on the true story of Black men and women from the Hill District neighborhood, the paramedics of Freedom House Ambulance who became trailblazers in pre-hospital and CPR care. The screening will be followed by the post panel discussion with Mitchell Brown (original Freedom House Ambulance Paramedic) and Dr. Mark Hanna (CUIMC, Pediatrics Emergency Medicine). Interactive training sessions will include Stop the Bleed, Narcan, and Hand-on CPR.?

Her leadership is evident in her work with Employee Resource Groups, fostering community, breaking down barriers, and promoting understanding. Ashley's strategic approach has significantly contributed to advancing CUIMC's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) strategy, making her a true champion in the field. Beyond her role in DEIB programming, Ashley's portfolio of projects underscores her commitment to recruiting and retaining diverse talent at the medical center. Her strategic approach and hands-on management have played a pivotal role in advancing CUIMC's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) strategy. ? Ashley's professional journey, rooted in a BS in Criminal Justice from John Jay College of Criminal Justice, has been marked by numerous accolades. In 2021, her team's Project PossAbility hiring initiative earned recognition from the Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities. In 2022, they received the Diversity Healthcare Leaders Award for CUIMC. It is no surprise that in 2023, Ashley herself received the inaugural Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Excellence Award. Beyond her professional accomplishments, Ashley's commitment to recruiting and retaining diverse talent has earned her recognition, including this prestigious Baton Award today.
