Cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI) are driving the transformation of Europe’s telecom sector. Digital innovation is helping telecom operators modernise everything from network management to customer support. Yet, some large telecom operators – ironically, those benefiting the most from digital innovation – claim that the very tech firms enabling their digital transformation are also those ‘exploiting’ telecom networks, and argue the two business models are converging. https://lnkd.in/enjvifKa

Living in the world today practically necessitates a strong connection to digital services. While it is still possible to go through life without doing everything digitally, our banking, businesses, healthcare, connections with family and friends, culture and so much more are all facilitated in part through digital participation. Our digital lives depend on knowing that our information will be kept safe — we don’t want to use a service if we don’t trust it to secure our data, and neither do any businesses or governments. But we currently live in an era where cybercrime and cyberattacks are becoming more common. To protect our data and ensure the security of the digital structures we all rely on, encryption is an essential tool. https://lnkd.in/eEGUgJFn

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit has issued a decision in the long-running Capitol Records v. Vimeo litigation by leading record labels against the video platform Vimeo. The decision affirms the court’s commitment to applying the safe harbors of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) sufficiently broadly to satisfy Congress’s objective of promoting the growth of the Internet. At the same time, the case shows how costly, time-consuming litigation over the scope of the DMCA’s safe harbors can interfere with this intent. https://lnkd.in/e4fEtACg

Before you go on break read up on the latest case that impacts the future of #AI! The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit just issued a decision that on its surface appears to be a straightforward interpretation of the Copyright Act in a dispute relating to software, but likely will have far-reaching implications for generative artificial intelligence systems. https://buff.ly/4gpY3I2

Tricia McCleary discusses policymakers' recent efforts to address media sustainability and support their local news ecosystems. However, one of the more problematic practices is mandatory online news payments, generally seen in the form of “link taxes,” that force digital services to pay just for linking to news websites or enter into agreements with publications to compensate them. Despite increasing unintended consequences, these laws continue to resurface. https://lnkd.in/eyiM2V-D

In 2024, #AI took center stage in legislative discussions across the United States, reflecting the rapid growth of this transformative technology. From ensuring transparency in AI-generated content to regulating advanced applications like deepfakes and digital replicas, state governments sought to tackle the opportunities and challenges posed by this technology. https://buff.ly/49xTKb5

Over the past five years, the European Commission has introduced dozens of new digital laws, creating a complex web of rules burdening #SMEs and driving firms abroad. During the next five-year term, the EU institutions must prioritise the effective implementation of these existing laws, rather than keep proposing new ones. https://buff.ly/3D09ffT
