Discussing the rise of Family Offices and Ultra-High Net Worth (UHNWIs) on Bloomberg’s Horizons Middle East and Africa program was our Head of Emerging Markets Marco Pagliara. Pagliara said: “In the Middle East and Asia, you have increasing numbers [of Family Offices] with increasing sophistication, and we are seeing very significant momentum in that segment.” “To cover effectively Family Offices and UHNW individuals, you need a specific value proposition, and Deutsche Bank has a unique combination of a strong presence in capital markets and institutional access in capital markets. We are one of the largest lending platforms available to UHNWs; we are very strong on the structured lending side. Ultimately, we have the ability to manage sophisticated Family Offices in a professional way. Just ahead of Thanksgiving and with the opening of the Christmas markets in some European countries, we're taking a closer look at consumption. "So far, US consumption has been really robust," says Dirk Steffen, our Chief Investment Officer EMEA and Global Chief Investment Strategist, "which is probably also due to the fact that the US labour market is still holding up." Dirk expects relatively strong consumer activity ending the year. Aside from Black Friday, Cyber Monday and holiday shopping, activity will be further accelerated by an uptick in travel, including in other countries around the globe. He comments on the third-quarter earnings season, saying that not only have the mega-caps and growth stocks in the US delivered good results so far but that Europe has also done relatively well in terms of earnings growth. In this week’s #CIOWeeklyInvestmentOutlook, the Private Bank’s Chief Global Investment Officer, Christian Nolting, says that the market “euphoria” since the U.S. election may start to temper. “The discussion about austerity is probably gone for the time being,” and that could be inflationary and send longer-term yields higher, Christian says. “We do not expect yields to go massively lower from here.” Meanwhile, third-quarter earnings season is mostly complete, though there are still some major names left to report. “If companies continue to deliver on the earnings, that could justify higher index levels,” Christian says. How important are social and governance factors when investing sustainably? Maybe more than we realise. In our 4th annual CIO survey of ESG investing, we explore attitudes to ESG and expectations for the sustainable transition. We found that while environmental factors remain a focus for investors, the survey results show increasing attention to social and governance aspects. Investors are taking a more multifaceted approach to ESG, often pursuing multiple goals such as creating a fairer society and enhancing governance, supporting the case for a balanced assessment of all three ESG pillars. Over half of our survey respondents are planning to boost their ESG allocations in the next five years -- but concerns about risk and return remain widespread, with some investors questioning the short-term performance of ESG investments, particularly in volatile markets. When looking more closely at investing for the sustainable transition, we found that investors expect different sectors to be performance leaders -- depending on the time horizon. In the short term, AI and digitization were by far the preferred sectors. In the medium term, certain broad sustainability sectors like healthcare and infrastructure are expected to deliver higher investment performance. Over the long term, the Blue Economy is expected to have the highest returns because environmental factors are expected to increasingly influence investment returns. Markus H.-P. Müller, Deutsche Bank’s Chief Investment Officer ESG and Global Head of the CIO, had this to say about this year’s survey results: “These results show that ESG investment remains appealing and remind us that environmental considerations will be accompanied by social and governance objectives too. In this week’s #CIOWeeklyInvestmentOutlook, the Private Bank’s Chief Investment Officer for the Americas, Deepak Puri, says the post-election boost for U.S. stocks can be partly attributed to the speed at which the result became known. “The elections were a risk event. Elections bring uncertainty, but the memory of 2020 was quite vivid in the investor's psyche,” Deepak says. “The fact that we have a result very quickly has created this relief rally.” The Federal Reserve also delivered an interest-rate cut, and noted that inflation is now closer to its target level. “The Fed will go where the data leads us” at its next meetings, Deepak says.
