    Do you put a lot of time and effort into 5S activity only having it fall over a few weeks or months later? There is nothing more disappointing than seeing the artifacts of failed improvement initiatives. It’s a common problem when we treat 5S like a tidy up and we lack the discipline to maintain the gains made through decluttering and organisation. It’s also common to see improvement activity compromised as soon as production pressure ramps up and all of a sudden time for 5S maintenance disappears. Standardise is the line in the sand where we define what “should” happen. A few tips: ? Set the standard in a considered way - particularly when starting out as we can be unrealistic in our expectations ? Ensure the people working in the area own the standard ? Define when the standard is to be reset to the standard - end of job? shift? day? week? ? Ensure the standard is communicated visually and simply in situ ? Create a checklist to maintain the standard and set the cadence ? Ensure people are accountable and given the time and resources to maintain the standard Maintaining the standard requires discipline and it’s imperative we stick to the daily 5S process even when there are other competing demands. #chaostocalm #lean
