If you know anyone who has used an intrauterine device (IUD), there is a good chance you have heard that person describe anxiety, fear or pain around the procedure. Share this post with them! Denver Health nurse practitioner Sarah Warsh has long been advocating for more expansive, targeted interventions in our learning health system while planning research that gives patients the opportunity to share their experiences. When the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently released its new IUD insertion pain-management guidelines, Denver Health was ahead of the game. Warsh and Nicki Nguyen, MD, obstetrics physician, launched a study last month to learn more from their patients regarding IUD procedures. The study is offered in all visits at which patients request information on birth control at Denver Health.??????????? Another fun post for the week??. We had an offsite (really an onsite!) that included lots of wrapping gifts in our third annual birthday gift drive via Foster Fête to benefit Denver Health's Connections for Kids Clinic. ?? The clinic is a medical home for children in welfare custody and is run by Denver Health physician and researcher James Kaferly, MD. ???Foster Fete provides birthday bags to kids needing some extra support around their birthdays. https://lnkd.in/gzeJsCP5 #researchexcellence #givealittle #kinshipfamilies (Four pictures of a large group in a conference room wrapping gifts and one picture of the entire group posing around the gifts).

We had to share this picture of senior research assistant Ellie D. posing as Ernest "Gene" Moore, MD, trauma surgery physician and one of our learning health system's favorite clinician researchers. Dr. Moore's academic contributions to our system are impossible to list. For today, please also enjoy his office, which itself provides some spooky sights! ?? Here's to the craziness in our jobs using research to fortify the high-quality and equitable care at Denver Health. #researchexcellence #halloween #halloween2024 #learninghealthsystem

Thank you to Public Health Institute at Denver Health (PHIDH) and the great work they do in research on infectious disease. See their opinion piece on World Health Organization's End TB Strategy by 2035.
?? Tuberculosis (TB) is the #1 infectious disease killer in the world. ?? The World Health Organization has an ambitious effort called The End TB Strategy by 2035. Denver Health TB experts Amy Beeson, MD, Randall Reves, MD and Bob Belknap, MD, Public Health Institute at Denver Health executive director, have published an opinion piece in Clinical Microbiology and Infection advocating for more research into one treatment for latent TB infection (LBTI) to meet the WHO’s goal ???? https://ow.ly/JWfI50TRNGE #PHIDenverHealth #GlobalHealth #TuberculosisAwareness #Denver Denver Health ESCMID - European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases

?? Congratulations to the latest awardees of our Pilot Study Grant Program, which is core to our work in advancing our learning health system. This round, Denver Health Office of Research is providing Andres Camacho, MD, Megan Smith, PT, DPT, OCS, Dale Terasaki, MD, MPH, and Jason Mansoori, MD, MS with financial resources to support their research which later may be leveraged to seek external funding. Their pilot studies are: -Dr. Camacho: “Prehospital Patients with a Preference for a Language Other Than English: A Mixed Methods Study” -Dr. Smith: “Blood Flow Restriction in Patients with Lower Extremity Fractures” -Dr. Terasaki: “PEth as a Remotely Obtained Outcome: Feasibility for Inpatient Trials (PROOF-IT)” Dr. Mansoori: “Implementation of a Critical Care Nudge unit within the Medical Intensive Care Unit at Denver Health” #researchexcellence #researchequity #highqualitycare #learninghealthsystem

?? Denver Health's learning health system is anchored by research that supports and shapes high quality and equitable care. ?? Our department of orthopedics, led by Cyril Mauffrey MD, FRCS, FACS, has published two papers addressing diverse representation in the writing and publishing of research, which has grown considerably over the last several years. 1?? The first empowers orthopedic researchers, and researchers in general, with a simple framework for writing a research manuscript using available checklists and general research knowledge. 2?? The second creates and validates a comprehensive author diversity scoring system that quantifies authorship diversity in orthopedic manuscripts. ?? https://lnkd.in/gGvMkjGq https://lnkd.in/ghNCeC4V #researchequity #researechdiversity #learninghealthsystem

We are returning to you with more work from Sonia Okuyama, MD, division chief of Hematology and Oncology, and her team, as they continue to advance high-quality, equitable care for patients in our learning health system. The team has published two more studies in hematology-oncology research following their work published this summer on characterizing demographic factors associated with those undergoing genetic testing for hereditary cancer syndromes (HCS). (Read our post on this study here: https://lnkd.in/gM3gj7Xf). 1?? The first recent study shows the results of a clinical trial that Dr. Okuyama specifically opened to treat one of her patients with PNH, an extremely?rare form of blood disorder. Accepted by PLOS ONE, the study examined the effects of replacing eculizumab with a different inhibitor therapy called pegcetacoplan, which showed improvement in outcomes and reduced fatigue. 2?? The team’s second study, “Feasibility of an electronic patient-facing cancer family history tool in medically underserved populations" (https://lnkd.in/gMVtFh2T) involved the development of an electronic patient-facing family history collection tool that is compared with information collected by genetic counselors. The study concluded that implementation of such a tool could increase identification of people at risk for HCS, including those with barriers to health care access. ??This study has led to the funding of follow-up research that will further develop the electronic collection tool. The award is a PREMMplus R01 award initiative that is in collaboration with the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and includes researchers from Harvard University, Yale University, Vanderbilt University and Kaiser Permanente. #learninghealthsystem #researchequity #researchexcellence
The mission of Denver Health is to provide high quality and equitable care to its patients. Our researchers are always searching for ways to fortify this care with their discoveries. We are so grateful to Sonia Okuyama, MD, division chief of Hematology and Oncology, whose careful work addresses inequities in research as well as in care. Dr. Okuyama has just published research in American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) seeking to characterize demographic factors associated with those undergoing genetic testing for hereditary cancer syndromes (HCS) in our urban safety-net hospital. Testing is inexpensive but historically has also been less available to patients like ours with fewer resources. Patients identifying as Black, having colon or prostate cancer or having an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group score of 2 had significantly lower association with genetic testing. ??Efforts to increase HCS testing in these patients will be important to advance equitable cancer care.?? https://lnkd.in/gkSkeqk2 #safetynethospital #learninghealthsystem #researchequity
