Get to know: Dance Magazine Award Honoree George Faison ? For choreographer George Faison, it all started when a high school friend took him to a performance of Alvin Ailey’s “Revelations.” Reflecting on the iconic wedge formation from the opening section, Faison says, “that was how I wanted to live. With abandon. Without restrictions. Without holding back. So focused. So purposeful.” That’s precisely what Faison did—first as a leading dancer with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, where his spirited presence, long lines, and spitfire turns were unforgettable, and then as a performer and choreographer in musical theater and beyond. Get to know: Dance Magazine Award Honoree Joanna Haigood ? For 44 years, Joanna Haigood’s vision as artistic director of Zaccho Dance Theatre has combined soaring imagination and deeply grounded curiosity. She aims to shift communities’ relationships with history—and to inspire fresh commitment to the future. “As I’m getting older, I’m thinking about what is useful,” Haigood says. “Right now, I feel that our society is lost in so many ways. Finding our way back to love—not just of family, but of community, and of the planet—that feels critical.” Learn more at https://lnkd.in/gNTwmGBU This week we’re sharing tributes to all of the 2024 Dance Magazine Award honorees. Into retirement, Staines will continue her work as a global ambassador for Canada’s National Ballet School. “This is really meaningful now that I can choose how to direct my time,” she says. “It is a beautiful way to keep linking arms with leaders and emerging artists and artists around the world to gradually shift the dial in ways that are essential for keeping ballet vibrant and alive into the future.” Learn more at https://lnkd.in/essAh6q6 This week we’re sharing tributes to all of the 2024 Dance Magazine Award honorees. Get to know: Dance Magazine Award Honoree Shen Wei ? Shen Wei blends art forms like watercolors. He is accomplished in not just multiple forms of dance but also painting, set design, costuming, film, architecture, calligraphy, and poetry—all of which he integrates into his artistic practice. “Making art gives meaning and value to my life and brings magic to the world,” he says. Spending days in the studio dancing and choreographing while also carving out time for painting, Shen Wei pushed the envelope of physicality in visual art, sometimes eschewing the paintbrush and using parts of his body to apply the paint. He extended this method into several choreographic works, in which paint-slathered dancers fill a floor canvas through their dancing. Remembering Judith Jamison (1943–2024): Dancer, Choreographer, Artistic Director, and Keeper of the Flame During her extraordinary lifetime, Judith Jamison built a legacy not only as a performer and leader of singular vision, but also as a champion of numerous other dance artists. In the tributes to Jamison that have proliferated since she passed away on November 9, many have marveled at the scope of the longtime Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater director’s influence. A dancer’s pay in the U.S. is unpredictable. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median hourly pay for dancers and choreographers in 2023 was $24.95. But that number belies a wide range of experiences, with pay fluctuating depending on location, career level, and freelance status, among many other variables. All too often, the pay a dancer receives seems less than what their work is worth. As a result, unions and protests have grown in the industry. Dance artists are getting increasingly comfortable demanding more and speaking up about their work conditions. To help paint a picture of the current financial landscape in the industry, four dancers got candid about their typical earnings—and the financial needs and concerns that shape their careers.
